uh so i’m like spitballing and plotting for that mermaid thing and hooooo boy
basically seans grandma definitely that fell in love with a merboi and learned lots of little tricks for calming and training the capaill that she taught her son and grandson and sean just carries the magic of someone who’s family has met and been loved by one of the wild creatures of the sea.
Ok boys
So tsr fandom is lowkey dead atm (@ November where u at??) but anyways I’ve had this though in my mind for ages and I’m finally getting around to writing it down please enjoy my rambles.
Ok so: gays on thisby
Non-heteros have been on thisby since people have been on thisby. That’s just how humanity works. And considering the fact that people were most likely on thisby before even the church was on thisby, it’s very likely that gay people were just a part of life. I’m not super versed in the bible but to my knowledge I’ve also read that some versions of the bible don’t even mention homosexuality at all (I could be completely wrong here feel free to fact check me) so honestly I feel like it was happening and there was no moral reason that it shouldn’t just kept happening.
Clearly thisby is a place of tradition and unspoken rules where anything other than the norm wouldn’t seem to be ultimately embraced (*cough* women racing *cough*) but its also and island where people can’t really leave. It’s completely secluded and isolated and anything that they didn’t realize wasn’t the norm on the mainland probably wasn’t seen as wrong.
Another thing to keep in mind is that a decent percentage of the population were sailors. Everyone knows all the quips about sailors but they’re anchored in truth. (Pun intended) Not to mention thisby has no lack of widows, widowers and orphans. Thisby seems like the kind of place that likes a relatively no nonsense way of life and if a couple retired sailors want to take in an orphan and raise it together to keep it off the streets and less of a burden on the orphanage why would the people stop them? If two widows wanted to move in together and raise their children while minimizing living costs why not? (Kind of like in the show godless. I can’t think of the names of the characters but anyway)
The interesting takeaway from this for me is that many a headcannon feature gabe and beech and tommy leaving because they were in a relationship(s) and were afraid of the backlash but honestly I feel like there was so much more that convinced gabe to leave. The whole way of life on the island disgusted him and he felt out of place. To say that the reason he left was because he was having a sexuality crisis and was abandoning his family for a Cute Boy takes away from his roundness, and to me his redeemability as a character.
Also my personal oc Daniel is gay for Finn and I don’t want to write about weird homophobic issues on the island let them be happy. (This is assuming I ever get around to writing about Daniel again lol)
(Also this is in no way shape or form targeted at anyone or any particular headcannon it’s just a word vomit that’s been building up inside for a few months and needed to be spewed into the internet.)
This is potentially useless and uninteresting and not really well thought out but here you go anyways. Pls enjoy
Wanted to go draft smth for the mer ppl but found and older Finn x Daniel fic that I started and never finished so guess what I’m doing now
