Midnight Special - review

On today’s movie marathon list was Midnight Special. I want to start by saying that I love Lucas, he was such a sweetheart. Trusting your friend enough to go on a cross-country run from the officials takes a lot of guts. And as an added bonus theres a good chance that one gets hurt badly (as he did) and gets locked up for a long time (as he did, even though I have a feeling Paul might have a trick or two up his sleeves that helps both Lucas and Roy).

Alton’s parents... There was a lot left unsaid and unexplained between them, their history together and with Alton and it made me frustrated. There was a lot that was unexplained within the film and I feel like I have more questions than answers when the credits started rolling.

- What happened with Doak and Levi?

- How did the two of them find the runaways?

- Was the man that Roy, Lucas and Alton stayed with Roy’s father? Uncle? What was his connection to the Ranch and the boys?

- Why wasn’t Sarah questioned before, she is afterall Alton’s birth mother?

- What was the role of the FBI, the guns with the Ranch or something more?

- How did everyone know about Alton?

- What happened to Sarah’s mom? That was such an odd scene, it didn’t make any sense to me.

- What did Paul see when he was with Alton on the white room?

- How did Paul crack the code and know where they were going?

- Who recovered Paul from the drop-off site? Was it far from the end location?

- Was he reprimanded for his actions?

- Who sent out the amber alert if it wasn’t the Ranch? Or was it?

- What happened with the Ranch, did the people go back there and continue listening to the ramblings of the “father”? Or did they die on March 6th?

- Why Sarah was smiling at the end?

- What was the reflection on Roy’s eyes in the last shot?

- In the end, who was good and who was bad?

I felt like some of the characters were really one-dimensional, I really didn’t see a lot of point in them, for example with Sarah, the mother. She could’ve (in my opinion) have been completely erased from the film and still it would’ve been a complete film. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Kirsten Dunst’s portayal but we weren’t give much to go on in terms of her character. Same goes for the FBI agent, in the beginning I thought he’d play a much bigger role and then nothiing.

I think Michael Shannon provided a massive performance and he should be praised for it. All the little things that he did sold me his character really well and love that he felt for his son. I’m really sad that their story ended too fast and without proper goodbye (looking at you Hollywood, why can’t you give fathers and sons proper time together?). Also, the kid who played Alton will hopefully have a really good and amazing career.

I would’ve loved to dig deeper into the Ranch and the background on that as well as the NSA’s involvement with both Alton and the Ranch. I would’ve also loved to have seen more of Paul Sevier and his connection to the case and Alton. I felt there was something more underline all of that.

As I’m writing this, I’m watching the extras from the Bluray and there are things here I wish they’d explored more within the movie. It’s a shame really, as these little tidbits we get here would’ve really deepened the movie in my opinion.

Over all, I think all the actors were picked really good for their roles and the scenes were beautifully shot. 3/5, will probably watch again (hopefully to understand more about the film).
