Aluprof Reiterate the Importance of Correct Specification of Internal Aluminium Fire Screens
In the UK, internal fire screens are subject to stringent performance and safety standards to ensure they provide effective fire resistance and compartmentation. The key applicable standard is BS EN 13501-2, which classifies the fire resistance performance of building elements, including glazed screens, in terms of integrity (E), insulation (I), and radiation (W). Testing is carried out to BS EN 1634-1, which assesses the resistance of door and shutter assemblies and glazed elements to fire exposure. Additionally, the Building Regulations Approved Document B sets out the fire safety requirements for internal separations and escape routes, specifying how long a fire screen must resist fire and prevent the passage of smoke and flames in various building types and risk areas.
Aluminium framed fire screens offer a compelling combination of strength, fire performance and design flexibility that often surpasses other materials. They are lightweight yet structurally robust, allowing for slimmer profiles and larger glazed areas that maximise natural light while maintaining critical fire protection. Aluminium is inherently corrosion-resistant and durable, reducing long-term maintenance costs, and can be finished in a wide range of powder-coated colours to suit any interior aesthetic. Combined with advanced fire-resistant glazing and internal insulation materials, aluminium systems can achieve high fire ratings without compromising on style or installation efficiency, making them a smart choice for modern commercial and residential environments. To make aluminium framing fire resistant, manufacturers incorporate specialised fire-retardant materials between the frame profiles that act as thermal barriers and insulators. These typically include intumescent strips or inserts, which expand rapidly when exposed to heat, sealing gaps and preventing the passage of flames and smoke. Within the aluminium frames ceramic insulation, and/or gypsum-based infills are also used to maintain the structural integrity of the frame under extreme temperatures. Together with fire-rated glazing and compatible gaskets, these elements allow the aluminium fire screen system to achieve the required EI classification, ensuring both integrity and insulation performance during a fire event.
Modern aluminium fire systems are thermally broken and incorporate specialist glazing and gaskets, allowing them to meet EI30, EI60, or even EI120 classifications (maintaining integrity in minutes) while maintaining slim, elegant profiles suitable for contemporary interiors. This combination of strength and precision engineering allows for larger glazed areas and minimal sight-lines, enhancing aesthetics without compromising safety. Aluminium is fully recyclable without loss of properties, contributing to low embodied carbon and supporting circular construction practices. Its durability also ensures long service life with minimal maintenance, making it ideal for high-traffic environments such as offices, hospitals, and educational buildings. Additionally, aluminium systems can be finished in a wide range of colours and textures through powder coating or anodising, ensuring both compliance with fire safety standards and alignment with the architectural vision of the interior space.
It is crucial to source both the frames and glazing from a single, tested supplier when specifying fire-rated glazed screens to ensure full system compatibility and certified performance. Fire resistance is achieved through a precisely engineered combination of frame, glazing, seals, and fixings that have been tested together as a complete assembly under BS EN 1634-1. Mixing components from different manufacturers can invalidate the certification and compromise the screen integrity and insulation performance in a fire situation. Using one approved supplier guarantees that the system has been independently tested and accredited as a whole, providing confidence in compliance with Building Regulations and ensuring a seamless installation backed by a single warranty and clear accountability for safety.
Aluprof offers a comprehensive range of fire-rated aluminium screens designed to meet the most demanding safety and aesthetic requirements in modern architecture. Systems, such as the MB-78EI, MB-118EI, and MB-86EI, provide certified fire resistance levels from EI15 up to EI120, ensuring effective compartmentation and protection for escape routes and high-risk zones. Each system has been tested to BS EN 1634-1 and classified to BS EN 13501-2, confirming compliance with UK and European fire standards. These profiles incorporate fire-retardant inserts and intumescent seals, maintaining structural integrity and insulation during prolonged exposure to heat while allowing for slimline, elegant frames suitable for both internal partitions and external façades.
Aluprof fire doors are high-performance aluminium door systems designed to provide superior fire resistance while maintaining modern aesthetics and functionality. Engineered using advanced thermal insulation and robust materials, these doors meet stringent European fire protection standards and also offer resistance to EI30, EI60, and EI120, ensuring effective containment of fire and smoke for specified durations. Suitable for commercial, public, and residential buildings, Aluprof fire doors integrate seamlessly with the company’s partition systems, offering both safety and design flexibility. They also allow for various glazing options, finishes, and hardware configurations, balancing protection, durability, and architectural appeal.
Complementing these systems, Aluprof offers a range of fire-rated glazing options that work in complete harmony with their aluminium framing. Glassprof Sp. z o.o. is a specialist manufacturer of fire-rated and architectural glass, based in Ogrodzona near Cieszyn, and is part of the Aluprof S.A. group. Their offer includes clear, laminated and insulated glass units capable of achieving the same EI classifications as the doors and frames, ensuring full system certification and performance consistency. By sourcing both the glazing and framing from Aluprof, specifiers benefit from a fully tested and warranted solution, guaranteeing compliance and simplifying the specification process. The result is a high-performance, visually refined fire screen system that combines safety, sustainability, and design flexibility, making it ideal for commercial, public, and residential buildings where fire protection and architectural style must go hand in hand.
At Capital Quarter 2 in Cardiff, Aluprof’s internal fire-rated aluminium screen systems were specified to deliver both safety and aesthetic excellence. The project required a high-performance glazed partitioning solution capable of providing effective fire compartmentation without compromising on natural light or visual connectivity. Aluprof’s MB-SR50N EFEKT system was specified for its proven fire resistance of up to EI60, offering robust integrity and insulation performance in line with UK Building Regulations and BS EN 13501-2 standards.
The MB-SR50N EFEKT curtain wall system used internally, features thermally broken aluminium profiles with fire-resistant insulation inserts placed inside the frame to maintain temperature stability during exposure to fire. Combined with certified fire-rated glazing, the system ensures consistent protection while maintaining the project’s contemporary design intent.

Aluprof’s Glazing Systems Blends Innovation with Heritage
By Wojciech Brożyna - MD Aluprof UK
Heritage aluminium system windows are an excellent alternative to traditional steel windows because they offer the same slim sightlines and authentic period aesthetics with enhanced performance and versatility. Many heritage projects require windows that maintain the original character of a building, especially in conservation areas or listed properties. Aluminium systems are designed to replicate the fine details of steel, ensuring that the architectural integrity is preserved without compromising on modern requirements.
Compared with steel, aluminium, heritage systems provide superior thermal efficiency and can easily achieve modern energy performance standards. Steel, whilst elegant, is a highly conductive material that often requires additional thermal breaks and can be prone to condensation. Aluminium systems, by contrast, are manufactured with advanced thermal breaks and glazing options, significantly reducing heat loss and improving comfort levels for occupants. This makes them particularly appealing for both renovation and new-build projects where sustainability and efficiency are key considerations.
Durability and maintenance are also strong advantages of aluminium over steel. Aluminium is naturally resistant to corrosion and does not require the same level of upkeep as steel, which often needs protective coatings or regular repainting to prevent rust. Heritage aluminium windows are powder coated for long-lasting finishes, offering decades of low-maintenance performance. Combined with their lighter weight, ease of installation, and broad range of colour and finish options, heritage aluminium systems give architects, builders, and homeowners a more practical yet equally stylish solution compared to traditional steel windows.
Heritage aluminium windows offer slim profiles that allow for much more glazing area, preserving the visual lightness typical of historic or heritage façades yet the frames are deep enough to incorporate thermal breaks, quality seals, and insulated glazing. This combination means you can have the look of traditional windows without sacrificing the comfort, energy efficiency or weather performance expected today.
Beyond looks and efficiency, aluminium windows are highly durable, low maintenance, and more sustainable than many alternatives. Aluminium doesn’t warp, rot or rust the way steel or timber can, even in challenging conditions, which means fewer repairs, less painting and less long-term cost. They also offer strong security options, with robust locking mechanisms and build quality. Aluminium is valuable and also highly recyclable, especially in a closed-loop scheme so, by using aluminium fenestration systems help contribute toward greener building practice.
Aluprof’s heritage MB-SLIMLINE system is a high-performance aluminium window and door solution designed to combine a minimal frame aesthetic with excellent technical parameters. It offers impressive thermal insulation with U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K, ensuring energy efficiency in line with modern building standards, while also providing strong acoustic insulation and durable weather resistance. Despite its ultra-slim profiles that maximise glazed areas for natural light, the system maintains high structural integrity, achieving Class 4 air tightness, Class E1500 water tightness, and Class C5 wind load resistance. This makes MB-SLIMLINE suitable for both residential and commercial applications where contemporary design must meet strict performance requirements.
In the UK, one high-profile project is the conversion of Bodmin Jail into a boutique hotel. This project used Aluprof’s MB-Slimline window system for the cell-windows. The building is Grade II listed, and the Aluprof system was chosen because it retains the thin sightlines characteristic of old steel windows, matching the aesthetic, whilst bringing in modern performance. The system allowed the developers to preserve the original look (such as retaining many of the existing features like stone walls, cell-bars etc.) but deliver better insulation and compliance with current building standards.
Another project is The Big Peg, in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. In its external refurbishment, the existing windows were replaced with Aluprof MB-SLIMLINE windows, giving the façades slim, crisp white frames that enhance the architectural character whilst improving energy efficiency and appearance. This is a good example of how slimline aluminium systems can be used in historic urban settings to both upgrade performance and respect heritage streetscapes.
Neptune Mill in Manchester is a historic former textile mill that has been transformed by Capital & Centric, the socially conscious property developer known for repurposing heritage buildings into vibrant communities. Utilising Aluprof’s MB-SLIMLINE the redevelopment preserves the mill’s industrial character while introducing contemporary design, high-quality living spaces and communal areas that foster a strong sense of community. Capital & Centric’s approach focuses on creative regeneration, sustainability, and social impact, making Neptune Mill a standout example of how the city’s historic fabric can be reimagined for modern urban living.

Aluprof Eases Gateway 2 Compliance
By Tom Cherowbrier - Major Projects Manager at Aluprof UK
Gateway 2 Compliance, introduced under the Building Safety Act 2022, is creating significant disruption across the Construction Industry. At this stage of the approval process, a complete and fully coordinated design must be submitted and approved before any building work can begin. This requirement represents a major shift from established practices where design and construction traditionally overlapped, allowing issues to be resolved on-site. The result has been widespread project delays, increased costs and logistical difficulties as developers and contractors adjust to the stricter regulatory environment.
Much of the challenge lies in the scale of information now required. Gateway 2 places a strong emphasis on detailed documentation and maintaining the ‘golden thread’ of information, ensuring that design intent, safety measures, and materials are all fully recorded. Many organisations, particularly smaller firms, are struggling with the resources and digital systems needed to meet these demands, added to this is a lack of clarity in how regulators will assess submissions, which has created uncertainty and hesitancy in moving projects forward. For an industry already under pressure to deliver more housing quickly, these bottlenecks are proving difficult to manage.
However, despite the frustrations, Gateway 2 is an essential step towards raising safety and quality standards in construction. The system was introduced to prevent unsafe compromises and poor record-keeping, lessons tragically underscored by the Grenfell Tower fire. By ensuring that critical safety measures are embedded in the design before work begins, Gateway 2 helps protect residents and provides greater accountability throughout the building’s lifecycle. Over time, the requirement for earlier collaboration, better coordination, and improved transparency has the potential to transform industry culture, leading to fewer defects, safer buildings, and stronger public confidence. Whilst the transition is undoubtedly challenging, Gateway 2 should be seen as an investment in a safer, more professional built environment.
Aluprof UK has demonstrated a strong commitment to aligning with the Building Safety Act 2022 requirements, particularly regarding Gateway 2 approvals. Their broad range of high-performance façade solutions, all 3rd party tested to relevant standards, with over 1,500 third party certificates of compliance, makes Aluprof the ideal partner. Their major projects team collaborates closely with specialist façade contractors to ensure that all necessary supporting documentation and compliance measures are meticulously prepared for submission to the Building Safety Regulator (BSR). This proactive approach is crucial, especially considering recent challenges faced by the BSR, such as delays in processing Gateway 2 applications due to an outsourced delivery model and a shortage of in-house technical expertise.
Choosing Aluprof fire-resistant screens together with Glassprof glass provides a reliable and fully tested solution for safeguarding buildings while maintaining design flexibility. Aluprof’s systems are engineered to deliver high levels of fire resistance, compartmentation, and smoke control without compromising on aesthetics, while Glassprof glass complements these systems with certified fire-rated glazing that ensures transparency, natural light, and architectural freedom. Together, they offer architects, contractors, sub-contractors and building owners a trusted combination of safety, compliance, and performance for all construction projects.
Aluprof’s vertical integration benefits specifiers by ensuring consistent product quality, streamlined supply chains, and enhanced technical support. With in-house system design, manufacturing, and testing, Aluprof delivers high-performance aluminium systems that meet stringent UK and EU building regulations, including Gateway 2 requirements under the Building Safety Act 2022. This integrated approach allows for greater customisation, faster lead times and improved cost efficiency, giving specifiers confidence in project timelines and compliance. Additionally, direct collaboration with Aluprof’s experts ensures tailored solutions that align with architectural intent whilst enhancing sustainability and energy efficiency.
Current statistics show that Gateway 2 compliance remains a major challenge for the Construction Industry. Approval rates are very low, with only around 10–14% of applications being approved. For example, as of mid-2025, just 20 out of 187 new higher-risk building applications had received approval. Across all new build and remedial submissions between late 2023 and 2024, the success rate was similar at 146 approvals from 1,018 applications. The vast majority of applications—up to 75%—are being rejected due to incomplete or poor-quality submissions, while a further 20% are ruled invalid because they fail to meet statutory requirements or lack essential documentation.
Delays are also a serious issue, with the average approval taking around 22 weeks, far exceeding the statutory 8–12 week timeframe. In some cases, projects have been delayed by 40 weeks or more waiting for Gateway 2 clearance. Freedom of Information data shows that by early 2025, over 700 applications were still pending, adding to a significant backlog. These statistics highlight both the complexity of the new regime and the ongoing difficulties applicants face in providing the detailed fire and structural safety information required by the Building Safety Regulator.
Speeding up Gateway 2 approvals requires both improved application quality from Industry and greater efficiency within the BSR. Many delays stem from incomplete or poorly prepared submissions, so design teams must ensure that all structural and fire safety details are fully coordinated and documented before applying. Investing in specialist consultants, carrying out thorough pre-application checks, and engaging earlier with the regulator can reduce the risk of rejection. Better training for architects, contractors, and consultants on Gateway 2 requirements would also help raise standards and cut down on the high percentage of invalid or incomplete applications currently being submitted.
