no because being a cashier is fucking insane. it is Thee most looked down upon position in the world and yet, the most necessary.
we get paid absolute dog shit money for even worse dog shit hours, because the company has to prioritize the full-time employees (aka managers) who half the time dont do shit anyway and just leave it all to said cashiers while they do fuck all for their eight hour shifts.
like what do you mean in order to get a basic fucking minimum wage cashiering job right now I need OPEN AVAILABILITY only to maybe potentially get three days a week MAX. how is anyone supposed to form a routine around their schedule if they never know when theyre supposed to work???? what if they need a second job (because nothing fucking pays enough to live anymore- even with a full time job half the time)
and thats another thing!!! even if you DO get a full time job in retail its still shit pay!!! what do you mean the managers get paid barely $20/hr WITH all your stupid fucking years of experience requirements
we literally get treated so fucking badly by everybody every single fucking day because we're the middle man for every possible issue that could happen to some bitchy customers' precious $50 dollar bag thats made so terribly its gonna fall apart in six months anyway- but somehow thats OUR fault. not the fact that companies are purposely making their products worse and worse specifically so you come back and spend more money. because we know you will. its too much of a hassle to try mending things I guess.
and anytime. every single time. cashiers vent about a shitty customer(s) all we get told is "well they pay your bills" "you just gotta suck it up sometimes" "the customer is always right!!" "we cant have that sort of mindset in this workplace" dont piss me off.
idk if this is just a me thing but ive been seeing more and more places start using radios that dont have earpieces which- and I have zero proof of this, it is entirely an observation made with knowledge of the hostility towards customer service workers- i feel has Something to do with keeping employees from talking to each other so much on the sales floor/ranting about customers quietly to each other. because those are both things my jobs would do and still do. I was lucky enough to have a workplace that was very tight knit in a good way, you could hear ppl laughing at stuff that was said over the headsets all day long depending on who was working that day. i am very lucky to have had coworkers that truly were in this together.
back to my original point however- I moved to a different position in my store that has nothing to do with the front end or cashiering, and yet a good 40% of the time i still have to At Least cover the front until a cashier is able to come in, to go back to finishing my Actual job, because the company is so fucking tight in hours All The Time that we dont have enough hours to give to the actual cashiers! im now doing two people's job for the pay of one, and half the time because of this I dont finish what I am actually there to do entirely, so the managers have to finish it instead (or yk, shove it onto another, already overworked cashier who can barely handle the ever growing line at their checkout, and thenget upset when it doesnt get done. but i digress)
im just.
cashiers deserve better.
they deserve priority in their jobs, they deserve to be able to have some sort of real, actual compensation for the abuse they endure ever goddamn day without fear of losing their jobs (whether that be more breaks to calm down, being able to yell back or enough money to make it actually worth dealing with grown fuckimg adults acting worse than children cuz theyve never been told no before in their life)
I know this post doesnt actually mean anything in the grand scheme of things. im just tired. its all so unfair and im tired of being the one who gets the short end of the stick about it. during 2020 we were all such Essential Workers and yet. here we are again. getting yelled at for 19 minutes because I cant refund someone twenty five fucking cents because of a tax difference I legally cant do shit about.
this goes doubly for grocery store workers btw.
