To people like my friend who say Stefan being friends and falling in love with Bonnie wouldn't serve any narrative purpose - Qetsiyah, Silas, and Amara.
Qetsiyah and Silas were close/best friends before they got engaged. Amara was Qetsiyah's handmaiden (or a favored slave if we're honest given the time period). Both Silas and Amara betrayed Qetsiyah. Not only did they steal her immortality potion, they betrayed her trust on her wedding day (side tangent, how did these idiots expect the most powerful witch of their time to react? Because Silas was powerful, but even he needed Qetsiyah to create immortality), ans are then portrayed as more innocent or undeserving of suffering (specifically specifically Amara who was NOT an "innocent woman" in this situation).
Now we have Bonnie, Stefan, and Elena. Stefan goes for Elena immediately due to her looks and contrast with Katherine, Elena learns nothing of him and even when they get closer, are they really? Bonnie was in the prime position to become his best friend and Plec ruined that because she's racist - I digress, back on my what if concept. So they become friends, at first because of Elena and then regardless of Elena.
The shit that happens can be kept, but now Stefan doesn't just seek Bonnie out because he wants something, he seeks her out because he just wants to. He starts falling in love, blah blah blah, the Delena crap starts up, fast forward and Bonnie realizes she loves Stefan and maybe they don't hook up immediately, but it's THERE.
Meaning, we get a mirror of sorts - because Bonnie would ALSO get more traits from her book version and thus be a bit unhinged like Qetsiyah (Bonnie McCullough wants to be choked to death and no, that's not an exaggeration).
And beyond that, can you imagine the DRAMA of it all? Silas being confused as hell by Stefan not only priorizing Bonnie over Elena, but getting clocked by Bonnie as not being Stefan? Qetsiyah thinking Bonnie's setting herself up only to witness Stefan choosing Bonnie over Elena. Elena being the one who gets "betrayed" in the scenario of "my lover chose my friend over me" in whatever convoluted plot the season would follow?
Yes, it would have served a MAJOR narrative purpose.

Kol woke to a hand tracing shapes onto his bare chest, it was the fact he could feel-smell Elijah’s close by that stopped him from grasping it too tight before the memories returned to him.
Who knew what Silas would do to him if he harmed his precious Amara.
Part of him thought it had to be a dream, because his current reality, sharing a bed with the Silas after dying to prevent his resurrection, would be the furthest thing he could possibly imagine.
But if he was a dream he should still be dead and the warm hand over his heart was a very good sign he wasn't.
He opened his eyes to find not Gilbert, not Tatia but the original owner of that face smiling at him softly.
Then again he had no reason to harm her, other than the slight slip up where she managed to drive Elijah insane but that had been fixed, returning her to his favourite person since she somehow revived him.
“My light,” she called him with an almost painful sweetness. Kol could maybe understand Silas destroying the world to be reunited with her.
“Why do you call me that?” He asked, he had tried to ask when he first woke up to her clinging to him calling him that, only she was very clearly not in any state to answer.
When she did get better it was due to his brother taking whatever caused it and while she had been distraught but sane, he had been concerned over Elijah.
The memory of his big brother crumpling to the ground and pleasing for something to stop as he held himself the way Amara had was going to stay in his mind for a while.
Kol pushed himself up slightly in bed to find his brother, asleep, almost crushed by two of the most powerful witches to ever live.
Pulled tight to Silas' side by the arm he had around Elijah while Qetsiyah laid on Elijah, her head on his chest.
It made some sense, from what Kol had managed to make out; the pair of them, once lovers betrayed and misunderstanding, had made a deal and reunited.
Elijah was a part of that, Kol apparently was too but they had focused on Elijah as the one, at that point suffering from the insanity Qetsiyah-Tessa had aimed to punish Amara.
So there focus on his brother had given Kol time to think and possibly run if Amara hadn't attached herself to his side once they returned to the boarding house where they left her.
“ You-your magic came to me alone so long ago,” she explained, “It was bright, warm and shining, like a small sun after so long cold, it kept him company for the last-”
“Thousand years.” He answered for her. He had spent centuries missing his magic and she had been holding it as a comfort in her torment.
He spent so much time doing everything to stop Silas' rise to protect the world and died, his death has helped led to Silas' rise and now he was sharing a bed with the madman because his soulmate had gotten attached to him.
And he wasn't sure he wanted to leave even if he could.
He hadn't missed the way Silas spoke of him and Elijah to Tessa, as things to trade-share, pets or the fact she had accepted.
The way the pair two thousand year old witches had spoken with but mostly over Elijah before they vanished with him upstairs.
But what did he have? All he had was his siblings and look at them; Klaus and Rebekah had barely mourned him, Elijah had mourned him but not avenged.
He was about as forgotten as Finn and he had never tried to kill them.
“They can fix this.” Amara told him, bringing him out of his thought, hand still settled on his chest that it took him a moment to understand what she was talking about.
“My magic?”
“Silas and Qetsiyah” her voice trembled when she said her name and Kol didn't doubt they would have to work on it, but there was no doubt in what she said next, “they'll fix it in the morning, make it right.”
“They can?”
“Of course,” she said as if it was the most obvious thing, “they can do anything.”
Given they made the immortality spell and cure or rather Tessa he shouldn't be surprised but-
“Why?” He asked.
“Because I'll ask or your brother will and they'll do it to make us happy.”
She smiled, all warmth and like sunlight, Kol could understand why Elijah fell so foolish to her doppelgangers.
“What is this?” He asked lifting his free hand to gesture to those behind her, the super witches smothering his brother.
“Another chance,” she replied quietly, “ one we won't ruin by secrets and lies.”
Kol found himself without words, he understood her want, his life had been destroyed by his mother's secret and lies, nothing had been the same since so instead he watched her hand as it returned to drawing patterns.
“Are you staying?” Amara spoke after several moments of quiet, hand lifting from him.
If he left he'd be leaving behind being “her light”, he'd be alone.
On the outside, again.
No, he didn’t want that.
By staying he was keeping watch on Silas, to make sure nothing world ending happened, he told himself.
“I know your love, your freedom, you-” she continued.
Possibly learn from Tessa, who was clearly the better at his favourite craft, if they could return his magic.
And he certainly couldn't leave Elijah alone with them, and how could he turn down two of the most powerful witches to ever live.
“Yes.” He answered, “Why would I want to be anywhere but here?” He asked, smirking at her as he leaned into her face.
Instead of flushing or leaning back as others had done before, Amara grinned, meeting him in the lean and kissing him, taking charge of the kiss in his shock.
When she broke it he stared, she giggled before pressing soft kisses to his face.
“My light.”
