BP is at it again.

The company that devastated the Gulf of Mexico with its Deepwater Horizon disaster wants to drill for oil near the pristine Amazon Reef. What could possibly go wrong?

Home to pink corals, sunset-colored fish and more than 60 species of sea sponge, the reef has been described as an "underwater rainforest" near the mouth of the Amazon River—and we're only just discovering how special it is.

But if BP's extreme drilling causes a spill, it could spell disaster for the reef and the wider area. We can't let this happen.

So starting this week, we're turning up the pressure on BP—working together to defend the reef from risky, spill-prone oil drilling.

And now we've got some help from an unlikely source. The Amazon Reef has a new champion—a celebrity advocate who'll stand up to BP and fight for justice.

EXPLORING THE AMAZON REEFS - FIRST IMAGES OF THE NEWLY DISCOVERED MARINE BIOMA

During a 20-day expedition Greenpeace captured the first underwater images of the Amazonian reef using a submarine launched from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, the Amazon Reefs is located at the mouth of the Amazon River (as picture above). 

In the far north of Brazil, where the Amazon River meets the sea, there is a newly-discovered natural treasure – a hidden coral reef in a region where no one thought possible. Because muddy water from the Amazon River clouds the sea surface, almost no light reaches the reef making finding a reef with a complex marine life there unlikely

It is one of the largest known reef systems in the world, with scientists estimating its length at over 970 kilometres, and its area as over 9,300 km2 (3,600 sq mi). Its discovery was released in April 2016, following an oceanographic study of the region in 2012. But evidence of a large structure near the delta of the Amazon River dated from as early as the 1950s.

The  reef is expected to reveal new species as scientists explore it further. But is threatened by oil exploration. 

Greenpeace Brazil said 95 wells have already been drilled in the region, none of which found economically or technically viable gas and oil. But the Brazilian government speculates that the area may contain 14bn barrels of oil. Drilling there means an imminent and constant risk of an oil spill. This is a threat not only to the reef, but to the ecosystem of the basin of the Amazon River mouth.

Greenpeace Brazil has captured the first underwater images of the Amazon Reef, a 9,500 km2 system of corals, sponges and rhodoliths located where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean—an area that the Brazilian government has opened for oil exploration.

A team of experts, including several oceanographers who announced the discovery of the reef last year, have joined the Greenpeace ship Esperanza on an expedition to document this new biome, which runs from French Guyana to the Brazilian state of Maranhão, an area larger than the cities of São Paulo or London. Oil companies Total and BP could start drilling in this area if they obtain authorization from the Brazilian government.

Oceans at threat: First humans deep dive into endangered Amazon Reef

On board the Greenpeace ship, six divers took the plunge to raise awareness about the irreversible risks to our ocean reefs.

Deep divers have descended into the Amazon Reef for the first time in history this week, off the coast of French Guiana. The purpose of the dive was to raise the alarm around the threats facing our oceans and campaign for a Global Ocean Treaty.

 On a year-long expedition from the Arctic to the Antarctic, the divers were travelling on board a Greenpeace ship and have now successfully completed the treacherous dive. The water in the region is known for having little visibility and dangerous currents, meaning humans have never been able to take the plunge before this point. Six divers undertook the dive into the Amazon Mouth basin, 60 to 220 metres deep at different points, to document the reef by taking high resolution photos.

 They also collected biological samples to better understand the threatened ecosystem off the north Atlantic coast of South America. DNA samples will be vital for scientists to determine which species are present in the area.

Total has applied for a license to drill for oil in the Amazon Reef region and operations could start as early as this year.

A team of scientists on board the Greenpeace Esperanza ship have documented the existence of a rhodolith field where French company Total intends to drill for oil, 120km off the northern coast of Brazil.

The finding proves the existence of a reef formation in the area and invalidates Total's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which states the closest reef formation is 8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) away from one of the oil blocks.

"Now that we know the Amazon Reef extension overlaps with the perimeter of Total's oil blocks, there is no other option for the Brazilian government but to deny the company's license to drill for oil in the region," said Thiago Almeida, Greenpeace Brazil campaigner.

"To learn the Amazon Reef extends beyond our expectations was one of the most exciting moments of my research about this ecosystem," said Fabiano Thompson, oceanographer and professor at Rio de Janeiro Federal University. "The more we research about the Amazon Reef, the more we find. We still know so little about this fascinating new ecosystem and the knowledge obtained so far indicates any oil drilling activity could seriously harm this unique system."

"The only right decision by Total now is to give up their plans to drill at the Amazon mouth, instead of trying to find ways to convince authorities to approve this risky project, rejected by science, local communities and by the Brazilian Environmental Agency."

Brazil's environmental agency (Ibama) rejected Tuesday the application for a license to drill in the mouth of the Amazon Basin by the French company Total (operating in a joint venture with BP). This is an important step towards defending the Amazon Reef; a unique and largely unexplored ecosystem—Total's closest block is only 8km away from the reef.

In a statement published Tuesday, Ibama's president, Suely Araujo, said that Total had not provided adequate information about the environmental impact of the project, making it impossible to grant the license. The company admits in their own Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that there is a 30 percent probability of oil reaching the reef in case of a spill.

Among the many flaws on Total´s Environmental Impact Assessment, Ibama listed, the oil dispersion modeling and potential cross border risks to French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela and Caribbean archipelagos. The note also highlights the lack of information about possible impacts to the welfare of mammals, turtles and birds that live in the region.
