The only tell that showed Toshiro’s surprise at being called out was the telltale way that his shoulders tensed before he turned around. He had not heard the man, whom he assumed to be one the hospital staff judging by the way he addressed him, nor had he initially been able to sense him. The reiatsu he now felt laid credence to the fact that this man was quite obviously no ordinary doctor, but considering he was here on a mission, Toshiro was not about to let that stop him.

“Visiting relatives.” His reply was dry in tone and he stuck his hands into the pants pockets of his gigai. At the very least, attempting to play off his true nature although he suspected that this man already knew he was no ordinary being.

“I am unfamiliar with this town so to be honest, I do not really know which way to go.”

He was breathing hard now, and even that hurt. Keeping his eyes open was one hell of a challenge, too, but Shinji managed it. He looked his unwelcome companion up and down, undeniable suspicion written all over his face. Shinji had never been quick to trust, and like hell was this dude going to be an exception to that just because he was, ostensibly, a doctor.

The doctor stepped forward, reaching out to help Shinji back down onto the bed. Instinctively, Shinji pulled away from the touch – or, he tried to, anyway. Pain flared in his side again, and he let out this annoying, strangled, little yelp, and found himself flopping back against the thin, standard-issue mattress.

“…stitches?” he repeated, once he succeeded in opening his screwed-shut eyes again. He glared at the doctor, more than a little irritated by the implications of what he was saying. “You’re shitting me. It’s that bad?”

Nothing about this made Shinji feel good. Maybe he was paranoid, but paranoia had saved his ass more than once in the past. Little by little, just in case, Shinji made a concentrated effort of reeling in his spiritual pressure.

It was, of course, unlikely that anyone in this hospital would know what spiritual pressure was, let alone what Shinji’s unique strain of it meant.

But then, Shinji knew, you could never be too careful.

            Burning. That’s what he felt. This wasn’t from the restraints around his arms nor his ankles. Holding him in place. The flesh below was red from struggling to get out, but no. This pain was coming from inside. Under the skin. Traveling through his blood. Grimmjow felt as though his insides were being melted to a liquid form. Having used up all his energy in an attempt to escape, his body quickly grew tired. No longer able to stand on his own.

...one of the guys had actually had a knife. 

Shinji didn’t remember much. He remembered white-hot pain in his side. He remembered the tang of blood in his nose. He remembered feeling his brand-new shirt go hot and wet, and then cold and wet. He remembered his vision going blurry and hazy - and in a way that had nothing to do with the booze or the weed that were steadily making their way out of his system after a late-night gig in a tucked-away jazz club in the no-good part of town. 

It had been a good night, too. He’d actually been in a damn good mood, until those greedy, grubby assholes had jumped him. 

I guess that’s what I get for dressing to the nines, he remembered thinking as his world started to go dark. Look swanky, and guys like these will assume I’ve got a fat stack in my wallet... tch...

He felt weak and stupid when he finally opened his eyes again.

He didn’t know where he was.

He didn’t know who this buttoned-up, white-haired, glasses-wearing dude was, either. 

He tried to sit up - to get the hell out of here, wherever here was - and pain ripped through his side again. 

He bit back a scream. He squeezed his eyes shut. He fell backwards, and his head hit something that felt suspiciously like a pillow. 

He hated this. Even if it meant facing total humiliation in front of Kisuke, Hiyori, and the others, he just wanted to go home.
