Legacy Project: Sergio Takes His Teddy Bear On A Harrowing Journey
Sergio is a young man who is twenty-one. He has been through tough life situations. His parents were going through poverty and kept looking for jobs. In East and South Dallas everything and anything could happen and they would go anywhere to get as much as help as possible. For example, his family could not afford food, so they went to their church asking for anything they could give, which turned out to be rotten bread and spoiled milk. His parents were trying to do anything to survive because his mother was pregnant.
When Sergio was a child, he crossed the border twice while his mother crossed it twice, once with her sister and once with her son Sergio. His mother came here and raised money to get an apartment for her child and herself. Finally, Sergio was coming to America for the first time and the second time he had a little sister that was a couple of months old. “I just remember crossing the river, and my mother telling me to cross. My sister kept crying while we crossed my parents were scared out of their wits and were frighten of getting caught. We hid under buses soaking wet and shivering from the cold.” Sergio said calmly. He remembers his mother mentioning a teddy bear he crossed with when he was four year old. He wouldn’t let go of it when he was crossing the border , even when he was asked to let go of it he didn’t to this day he has the teddy bear .
The Mexico border was a 1,951 miles long East to West, but all they needed was to just go straight not even a thousand miles to enter the United States. His parents were happy they made it through and didn’t have to go through it again. Sergio and his parents moved to Texas and from there they have stayed. Sergio is now a grown adult and was going to college at the age of 18 but quit after second semester. He decided to work in construction. He now lives with his parents and his sister in a wonderful house with two dogs. He said “One thing I wish would change, would be the generation of kids and teens now. They think they could do whatever they want and even get whatever they ask for with no responsibility. My sister and I grew up doing things around the house and even going to work and being a good child with no drugs or being spoiled.”
His advice to his little sister is “Never do drugs and stay in school. It might sound cliché, but I know you’re better than that.” Today, Sergio is a young man with a story, like everyone else has their own story and today we share this for tomorrow.
