My daughter Aoife and I had an action-packed long weekend that included not only an amazing conference with lots of classes and the chance to be around other herbalists, but also some fun side quests. . Thursday we went to the location where one of her favorite shows is filmed, and she unexpectedly got to meet some of the characters. . Friday we explored the Oktoberfest festivities of this little tourist town, sort of like Gatlinburg disguised as a stereotype of Bayern. . Saturday we went to the Georgia aquarium and saw sea dragons, which are fish that look like bladderwrack, and whale sharks, which i have wanted to see since i read about them in a picture book when i was maybe 4. (They are enormous). . Evernia and pseudevernia, grey and green, collectively known as "oakmoss", though i have never known it to especially favour oak trees, and it isn't a moss. It's a lichen, and my favourite antifungal. I use an oil extract of oakmoss frequently in my clinical practice. . . This morning, i was doing a presentation about medicinal lichens at the American Herbalists Guild symposium. I had pictures of most of them, but not of oakmoss. (I did have a small sample that i was wearing as a boutonnier). Anyway, right after the class was over i saw this batch of it, growing on a cherry tree.
