My fb book group is on fire due to some brown people posting articles by Latino authors with bad reviews of American Dirt due to its misrepresentation of people and circumstances, racism, stereotypical characters, caricaturesque use of Spanish, and it being publicised as the "must read" for anyone who wants an insight in the Mexican/Latinx "immigrant situation" by an author that suddenly decided she was no longer white but Latina and claimed her husband was an immigrant too. Except she forgot to mention he was an IRISH immigrant. Hardly the same thing.
White people are apalled at the "attempts of censorship" and the terrible treatment of the "poor" author for her "honest efforts", and state that people are just rude, over critical, and plain angry for no reason.
These are the same people that can't let go of the poor representation of BDSM relationships in 50 Shades of Gray after 9 years, or the problematic writing in Twilight.
These are the same people who have absolutely no problem with The Woman in the Window and its sociopathic, con artist author who has likely plagiarized a lot of the plot from Sarah A. Denzil's novel Saving April, and even Hitckock's movie Rear Window. Why? Because, well, "it's so good!"
Conclusion: as long as you are a white author you can write about anything you want without concern for accuracy or correct representation of anything or anyone EXCEPT when you are spanking a chick the wrong way or your sparkling vampires are described with incorrect grammar.
