Everything but the Girl - “Missing” (1994)

On this day—August 8th, 1994—“Missing,” the second single from Everything but the Girl’s eighth studio album, Amplified Heart, was released. Though the initial 1994 release of the single was disappointing, after it was remixed by Todd Terry and re-released the following year, the song became a worldwide success, becoming a top ten hit in 20 countries. Up until this point, the duo’s previous indie pop albums had leaned toward vocal jazz, acoustic, and orchestral pop, but the overwhelming success of the remix pointed out a new direction for the band in refined, urban EDM, a path they would embrace even through a nearly quarter-century long hiatus beginning in 1999.

<Amplified Heart> Everything But The Girl

Everything but the Girl(이하 Ebtg)은 영국의 도시 헐(Hull)에서 결성된 듀오이다. 멤버인 트레이시 손(Tracey Thorn)과 벤 와트(Ben Watt)는 각자 자신의 음악을 하고 있었다. 1982년 대학에서 서로를 알게 된 이들은 듀오를 결성해 2000년이 될 때까지 활동을 이어갔다. 두 사람은 연인 관계가 되었지만 관계에 크게 얽매이지 않고 음악 활동을 지속했다. 하지만 2000년 무렵 두 사람은 가족으로서의 삶에 더 집중하기로 하면서 그룹 활동을 줄여나갔다.

1994년에 나온 그들의 일곱 번째 앨범 <Amplified Heart>는 비교적 후기 작업에 속한다. 이 앨범은 벤 와트가 희귀 질환인 ‘Autoimmune Disease(자기 면역 질환)’로 투병 생활을 하고 난 뒤 만들어진 것이기도 해 두 사람에겐 의미가 큰 앨범이 아닐까 짐작한다. B면에 실린 Missing은 그 당시 크게 히트했던 곡이며 이듬해 발표된 토드 테리(Todd Terry)의 리믹스 음악도 많은 사람들에게 오래 사랑받았다.

Ebtg의 음악적 색깔은 재즈와 팝을 접목한 소피스티 팝의 분류에 속하는 것이었다. 하지만 그들은 이 정의에 고정되지 않고 다양한 시도들을 하면서 자신들의 음악적 정체성을 형성하고 확장해갔다. 세 번째 앨범인 <Baby, the Stars Shine Bright>에서는 오케스트라를 가미한 음악을 선보였고, <Idlewild>에서는 신스 사운드와의 접목을 보여주며 신선하고 눈길을 사로잡는 음악들을 들려주었다.

<Amplified Heart> 이후 발표된 <Walking Wounded>와 <Temperamental>에서는 일렉트로니카의 비중이 더욱 늘어났다. 돌이켜보면 그 시절은 90년대 중후반이었고, 그때는 그들에게 일렉트로니카나 리믹스 등이 음악의 미래로 보였던 것인지도 모르겠다. 어쨌든 그런 의미에서 초기 색깔에 근접한 것을 더욱 세련되게 세공해낸 <Amplified Heart>는 그들의 음악을 말할 때 무엇보다 중요한 앨범이 될 수밖에 없을 것이다.

가장 분명하게 이 앨범의 색깔을 보여주는 곡은 역시 Rollercoaster와 Missing이 아닐까 한다. 두 곡 모두 마치 프랑스의 누벨바그(Nouvelle Vague) 영화*를 연상시키는 뮤직비디오가 있고, 두 사람이 배우로 등장해 재미있는 장면들을 연출하고 있다. 하지만 Rollercoaster가 밝은 장면들을 보여주는 반면 Missing은 다소 어두운 장면들로 이루어져 있다는 차이점이 있다. 가사에서 Rollercoaster가 사랑의 권태를 다루었다면 Missing은 사랑의 상실을 다루었기 때문이 아닐까.

보컬은 대부분 트레이시 손이 담당했지만 Walking to You에서 두 사람은 번갈아가며 노래를 한다. 기타 반주뿐인 단순한 멜로디와 구성이지만 맑은 분위기가 운치를 더해 더없이 자연스러운 음악을 마주하게 된다. We Walk the Same Line은 업비트로 분위기를 약간 전환시키는 곡이다.

포크와 재즈, 그리고 무그와 신스를 통한 전자 음악이 사운드의 기반이 되었지만 이 앨범에서는 색소폰과 스트링 세션, 잉글리시 호른 등의 악기들도 골고루 사용되어 음악적으로 더욱 풍성한 분위기를 그려내고 있다. 하지만 어떤 것도 도드라지는 법 없이 서로 조화를 이루도록 세심히 다듬어진 느낌이다. 이들의 음악을 들을 때 아무래도 가장 매력적으로 여겨지는 것은 부드럽고 섬세한 사운드 연출과 트레이시 손의 중성적인 보컬이 아닐까 한다. 침착한 분위기의 이 노래들은 어딘가 다운되고 절제되어 있다. 이는 Ebtg만의 음악 미학이 되었고, 시간이 흘러도 쉽게 잊혀지지 않는 업적으로 남았다.
