Occasion: Amputation Prevention Day Walkathon
Date: 9th Nov 2025
Venue: INHS ASHWINI
Good morning, esteemed colleagues, honoured guests, and dear participants,
It is with great pride and deep gratitude that I stand before you today as the President of the Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons Society of Maharashtra and Goa on the occasion of Amputation Prevention Day Walkathon. This day marks not only an opportunity for us to reflect on the significant medical challenges faced by individuals at risk of amputation but also a call to action—a call for us as medical professionals, caregivers, and society at large, to work together to prevent unnecessary amputations and improve the quality of life for so many people in our community.
Today’s walkathon is a symbolic and powerful reminder of the importance of prevention, awareness, and early intervention. We are here to unite in our shared goal of spreading knowledge about vascular diseases, their complications, and the steps that can be taken to avert the tragic consequences of amputation. As we walk together, we carry the message of hope, of healing, and of the possibility for better outcomes for those affected by peripheral arterial disease (PAD), diabetes, and other conditions that put people at risk of limb loss.
Why Amputation Prevention Matters
Amputation is often the end result of a series of preventable complications, many of which are linked to poorly managed vascular health. Conditions such as diabetes & peripheral arterial disease, if left untreated or undiagnosed, can lead to severe complications. Sadly, many of these amputations could have been avoided with timely intervention, early diagnosis, and proper care.
The physical, emotional, and economic burden of limb loss is immense, not just on the patient, but also on their families and communities. By preventing amputation, we are not only preserving mobility and independence but also ensuring a better quality of life and reducing the healthcare burden.
Our Role as Vascular Specialists
As vascular specialists, it is our duty to educate the public, advocate for the early detection of vascular diseases, and support interventions that can halt the progression of conditions that lead to amputation. We are at the forefront of research, diagnosis, and treatment in this area, and together, we can make a profound difference in preventing limb loss.
The work that the Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons Society of Maharashtra and Goa does, in collaboration with the Vascular Society of India, in organizing events like today’s walkathon is vital in raising awareness and fostering a proactive approach to vascular health. Through these initiatives, we hope to inspire a shift in how vascular diseases are understood and treated—moving from a reactive approach to a preventive one. Early intervention can save lives, preserve limbs, and restore hope.
A Call for Collaboration
While the medical community plays a pivotal role in preventing amputations, we cannot do it alone. It requires a collective effort. We need the support of government agencies, healthcare providers, community organizations, and individuals who are committed to improving public health. We also need the media to help amplify our message and reach as many people as possible with this important information.
Today’s walkathon is an embodiment of this collaborative spirit. Each of you, as participants, is helping to raise awareness about amputation prevention and showing your support for those at risk. Your participation sends a powerful message of solidarity to the people who need our help the most.
Conclusion
In closing, I want to thank each of you for being here today and for your continued commitment to making a difference in the lives of people affected by vascular diseases. Let us walk today not just as individuals, but as a united front—one that strives to prevent amputations, improve healthcare outcomes, and, most importantly, offer hope to those in need.
Let’s take this opportunity to inspire change, spread knowledge, and most importantly, remind ourselves of the incredible impact we can have on the lives of those we serve.
Jai Hind.
