Amy Klien is an American singer-songwriter, based in New York, she is a former member of the band Titus Andronicus (guitar and violin 2010–2011). Winter is taken from the forthcoming album, Winter/Time, which will be released on the 22nd November 2019, on Don Giovanni Records.

Amy Klein on Love's Forever Changes

Writer Jon Savage passed this along from an online magazine titled Hyped On Melancholy. The piece was written by Amy Klein, a poet and songwriter, about Love's legendary 1967 masterpiece Forever Changes album. It's one of the best pieces of music journalism I've read in years, and amplifies the need for more of the same. It also underscores what's been lost in recent years since the digital revolution, and streaming, and the fragmentation of the music industry have brought us a world where music itself has been devalued, under-appreciated, and diminished as an art form. Forever Changes is timeless, and its influence, and vision continues to grow with each passing year. Klein brings that all into sharper focus here.

SXSW 2017 - OEB Spreadsheet #52

Swinging back around to the A’s to highlight a few diverse artists from earlier announcements. Another great A worth supporting is the ACLU that won a small but meaningful victory this week. Highlights:

Annabel Allum (8) – Surry/London based singer songwriter Annabel Allum is carving her own unique lane in alternative rock. She writes direct lyrics the listener connects with on a visceral level and sings through waves of reverb and distortion that capture Allum’s frantic energy. She can slow it down with equal gravitas, though the music never slows down to boring. Musically she balances the light nature of her voice with the heavy themes of her songs and the distorted backing music.

Anna Von Hauswolff (7) – Anna von Hauswolff is a Swedish singer, pianist, organist and songwriter. She took up the church organ for her 2013 LP Ceremony and employees it again on her newest album The Miraculous, which is an intense rewarding journey of an album with three of the best songs clocking in at over eight and a half minutes. The album was recorded on one of Scandinavia’s largest pipe organs, at the concert hall Acusticum in Piteå, in Northern Sweden, with her band and longtime producer/collaborator Filip Leyman. The album incorporates avant-garde music and Hauswolff has cited black metal as a major influence on the album.

Aquilo (7) – Aquilo is an alternative electronic rock duo from England consisting of Tom Higham and Ben Fletcher. The duos sound is rich and full pop that incorporates lush electronic production and guitar and drums. There’s a nostalgic melancholy to their songs that draws calming emotions from the listener. These guys are a band to watch in the huge collection of artists playing SXSW.

Autre Ne Veut (7) - Autre Ne Veut is still riding high on his expansive third album Age of Transparency and recently posted a link to a great single Hold Me Close he produced for the new Overcoats record Young. His music continues to delve deeper into R&B’s darker experimental corners. The performance art element to Autre Ne Veut’s music adds to the complexity of his sound. Hopefully Autre Ne Veut’s SXSW 2017 sets will incorporate some new songs from the always inventive artist into his diverse mix of already released songs.

Amy Klein (6) - Poet and songwriter Amy Klein from New Jersey got her musical start in bands such as Titus Andronicus, Leda, and Hilly Eye. Klein’s thoughtful, honest, poetic lyrics are sung with the emotional openness of a healing wound. Quiet strength and confidence exude from songs like Valerie from her newest album Fire . Klein’s vocals are paired with driving garage guitars and the playing is loose and free on the eponymous track from the album. While every note isn’t pitch perfect, intention and emotion are perfectly conveyed in Klein’s expressive music.
