Gravity (2013)

Plot: Astronauts Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) are on a spacewalk, when their ship gets hit by a debris field. Left drifting in space, they face a desperate battle to find some way to survive and get back to Earth.

Review: Gravity won an incredible seven Oscars in 2014, and has won countless scores of other awards; however most of them were in the technical categories, and while it does look good, the plot itself is rather dull.

The majority of the runtime is all about Ryan (Bullock) cut adrift in space; she has Matt (Clooney) for company for a bit, but it soon turns into one woman’s battle to survive against all the odds. The end result is essentially like The Revenant, in that it all looks very nice, and the plot ticks all the boxes it should, but it feels a bit anodyne. The film never quite manages to build the tension to a point where it genuinely seems on a knife edge, and there is always a sense that Bullock will go on to survive. There is an angle that events might be in her head, due to the oxygen deprivation we know she’s experiencing at times, but it’s never played up enough.

What doesn’t help is the science, or lack of it, behind what is going on. You can debate whether the incident leading to the pair being cast adrift is realistic or not (even if it is, it may not be portrayed accurately), but the fact is that while all the scenarios are painstakingly planned out and recreated, there are going to be a large number of people who won’t believe them. Whether that’s right or not is up for debate, but film has created a shorthand for events when they happen on screen, and people are going to question everything. People want to know the science behind why Superman flies now; and when you present it like this, it’s got to be bang on.

So while the cinematography, editing, and all those areas that aren’t making the televised Oscars ceremony are superb, what they’re actually centered around is disappointing.
