I really dont understand why people are constantly blaming netflix over this when Disney is the one behind it. They're raising the price of buying the license to the marvel characters and it can literally be out of netflix's price range to renew it. Disney is probably doing it because they're probably going to be returning all these series to their own streaming platform. its too profitable to just let it go they're bound to be renewed but its just untenable for netflix anymore
It’s on both sides of it, actually? Netflix wants 10 episode season, Disney wants 13, they’re both unwilling to compromise. Netflix also, when it comes down to it, are the owners OF the character licenses so it spirals out from there. The IPs can be bought back, but the 2-year waiting period is so there’s no continuation of their franchises on competing platforms, and exclusively a point for them to milk the most out of their existing Netflix shows.
Additionally, they’re in debt to the parent networks for a lot of their shows. The license for The Office is up this year, and after they shelled out $100 million to keep ‘FRIENDS’ on there, and NBC isn’t going to renew the highest streamed show to them for anything less. They’ve, effectively, shot themselves in the foot and priced themselves out of their own market.
I mean, Netflix is in trouble, and the number of viewers they’re bleeding after canceling their most popular series’ can’t make up for that. They’re raising subscription fees AGAIN, to try and balance this out.
At this point, Disney just has to wait them out. If Netflix collapses, they can buy them, and then there’s no waiting period on licensing because they’d own the umbrella company under which they’re locked.
