Anders Lykos has felt the weight of his family’s legacy on his shoulders ever since he was old enough to walk. As the eldest of three, the duty was evenly split between them. He had inherited the shapeshifting gene, and his mind, there was little that separated him from a werewolf. While he didn’t feel the pain they did, and he felt no kinship towards witches that were outside the coven he was born into. His lineage could be directly traced to Hakon, the original shapeshifter whose choices cursed an entire line of his creation. Any shifting family he had turned into a dire wolf instead became werewolves, and most of their life was dedicated to protecting witches and heeding their calls. The ripple effect was instantaneous, and few canine shifters outside of wolves survived to this day and age.
His grandmother would tell him the stories that had been passed down through the generations, that Hel had blessed their coven exponentially, and any witch born into their family was destined for greatness. As a family most akin to water, they could manipulate the icy landscape to their choosing throughout the centuries. To inherit the shifting gene was to be a protector, and that’s exactly what Anders knew he had to do.
Growing up, he learned what his family’s history meant, and why it was so important to differentiate those who were dire wolf shifters from their werewolf counterparts. The only dire wolf shifters in existence were those from Hakon’s family he’d made after becoming mortal. Where he married a witch within the coven and began a family. Anders’ father was a witch, and his mother a shifter. It was simply a roll of the fates to see which gene he would carry. And when he had no magical abilities manifesting as a child, they knew what he would become. Legacy and family history has been ingrained in Anders’ mind his entire life, and his dedication to the coven never wavered. While he would protect his family, he would never heed a witch’s call outside of their coven. There was a bitterness within him – he’d seen the way the werewolves grasped for their connection to Fenrir; how their abilities had become more of a plague than a gift.
Anders had been tasked with watching the grave of his ancestor. Fenrir’s burial place had remained a secret within the coven itself. There was no telling what someone would wish to do with the power that place held; as Fenrir had been blessed by Artemis and Hel once, and both of the goddesses had their own touch upon his final resting place. His mother would teach him the ways of the land – and what it meant to be a dire wolf among the coven. As Anders became older, he began losing most of the carefree attitude he’d held as a young man. The grim exterior he held on to was the only thing he could control. Most of his life had been planned for him, and as he turned thirty, his memory decided it was tired of carrying the weight of his life as well.
Short term wise, there are things he forgets more often than not. It has slowly progressed, but Anders tries not to bring attention to it at times. His own issues have taken a spot on the backburner, and it was under his watch that the grave of Fenrir was disturbed. There was a moment where he couldn’t remember a thing – an hour of his memory, gone – where he came to in front of the grave, dug up, bones missing. The anger he felt was a mix of shame, despite his family insisting that it was a power beyond his control. Tasked with finding who had done this, the witches performed a ritual that led him to Corinth Bay. This would be the place where he would restore his ancestor’s grave, and punish those who did the coven wrong.
