Anders Nilsson has come out in an interview in Aftonbladet and said that his career was shortened by the team telling him not to check up on a possible concussion.

"I got a good whack two months before my "official" concussion. But the club quieted it down, and said that I didn't have a concussion. If you don't have an headache you don't have a concussion, they said."

I think it really cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to have strong LGBT allies on NHL teams. I was watching a Thomas Chabot interview from last season’s Pride Night and he actually wore Pride Tape during the game and when asked why, the first thing he said was basically “Mark Borowiecki”. Having those loud voices like Mark Borowiecki and Anders Nilsson in the room really makes a difference. I mean, look at the Sens’ Hockey is for Everyone videos this year; there wasn’t a single reference to the LGBT community, where last year it was like a central issue. Having those allies in the room makes their teammates take notice of the issue, and encourages them to speak out.

 I think those two guys are great examples of LGBT allies too, because they don’t just speak out to the media or on twitter, but they have a clear impact on their teammates.
