Cincinnati Father Sends A Photo To Teddy Roosevelt
This is the Mahley family, who lived at 2112 Staebler Street in Cincinnati's Lower Price Hill neighborhood in 1903. Mr. Andrew Mahley, a woodcarver, sent this photograph of his family [published 21 July 1903 by the Cincinnati Post] to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. That is Mr. Mahley second from left in the front row. The President had gone on another rant about there not being enough white, Anglo-Saxon births and Mr. Mahley assured Teddy that he, for his part, was propagating to beat the band in Cincinnati. Pictured are the 12 living children - out of a total of 18 - that had blessed the marriage of Mr. & Mrs. Mahley. Illustrated here are: (top row) Alma, 14; Ada, 21; Stella Schwarz, 23; George, 28; Anna, 25; Martha, 16;Emma, 26; (bottom row) Urban, 11; Mr. Andrew Mahley, 49; Oliver, 4; Herbert, 9; Cornelius, 3; Mrs. Philomena Mahley, 48; and Alfred, 19. Philomena Hammer and Andrew Mahley married in 1874. Both were born in Ohio from families originating in Alsace-Lorraine. (Although the Post and contemporary city directories spell the family name "Mahley," Andrew & Philomena are buried in St. Joseph Cemetery under headstones reading "Maley".)
