Calum was the widest known surfer in your town. people from your school would flock the beach when they got wind he would be there, just to see him and his signature board effortlessly glide through the waves. other surfers would stare and comment on his form, putting a proud smile on your face as you eavesdropped while you watched Calum. However, many girls liked to stare and watch too, and would whisper about his features and body in ways that made you cringe and see red.
Whenever Cal had a competition, you were always there with him, bright and early in the morning, wrapped in a moroccan blanket and sporting his worn Billabong baseball cap as you bit your nails in anticipation. This particular event was on a stormy morning, making the waves bigger and rougher than usual. Calum was already out on the water with the others, his bright green wet suit making him stand out from the bunch. A good wave came, and about half the group began paddling forward to catch it. It was a strong wave, getting the surfers good scores who took it, but you frowned when you saw Calum still out on the water with a few others, waiting for a better one to take.
You had watched Calum long enough to know when he sensed a good wave coming. His head would perk up and his muscles would tense as he waited for the perfect moment to begin paddling before lifting himself to his feet. You saw it happen now, and the crowd around you began murmuring and cheering loudly as Calum sliced through the water in front of the wave. When he quickly got to his feet, more cheers erupted around you.
It was a huge wave, and two of the others took it as well. One was knocked of almost instantly, and your nerves picked up as the wind began howling around you. The wave reached its climax peak, and Calum entered the rip curl. You were confident he was going to win it, when suddenly the wave crashed unexpectedly, taking Calum with it.
There was a few moments of silence around you as the wave mellowed into the rest of the tide. Blood roared in your ears as Calum’s team began rushing to the water to find him. You couldn’t move, and it seemed neither could anyone else as people waited to see his bright green suit at the surface again.
Someone spotted him before you did, the peak of his neon shoulders and his mop of wet, dark hair as he popped up in the water. When you finally saw him, a large breath of air released from your lips like you’d been holding it in for hours. he was okay. calum’s fists pumped in the air, and you knew, despite his fall, he was happy with his surf. he grabbed his board and began swimming back to shore, and was met with his team’s helping hands at the water’s edge. they took his board and checked him for damage as he walked up the beach, and you could hear Calum’s dismissive laugh as he got closer to you. “I’m fine guys, I swear. I didn’t hit any rocks, the water just knocked the wind outta me.“
You met him halfway across the beach, running up and jumping into his arms when he held them out to you. You gripped his wet curls tightly in your fingers before kissing his mouth firmly, passionately. "I thought you were gone for a minute,” You admitted, pulling back to look into his warm brown eyes, crinkling in the corners from smiling too hard. “For a few seconds I thought I actually lost you."
"I’m right here, baby, you don’t have to worry about me.” He murmured, kissing your forehead before throwing an arm around your shoulder as you walked the rest of the way down the beach to the crowd and the judges. People shouted congratulations at him, and girls stood in bitter silence when they realized their pining had been in vain. it made you all sorts of happy, this support for your boy, and when you looked up to see if he was basking in the attention, you found him only looking down at you. “ ’m lucky to have you, my girl, my number one fan,” He grinned, hip checking you when you laughed quietly. His eyes passed over the crowd of supporters before returning to yours. “you’re all the support i’ll ever need."
