My comment on the post wasn't meant to suggest that people are saying that nobody ever can use "Mutt", it was more-so a comment on how there's people out there that are quick to jump the gun (not eveyone, obviously) and assume that anyone who doesn't state their race and uses Mutt are ""evil monoracial people"" (Heavy quotes, i don't think monoracial people are evil) instead of maybe taking the time to think that hey, this person just... Doesn't wanna state their race cuz there's a lot of racism in the MOQAI community? (Not supposed to be. an attack on you btw if my tone accidentally comes across as rude. It seemed to me to be addressing a situation that we&'ve not seen with a certainty that thus felt unwarranted; it felt like a rather snide comment, yeah. I appreciate the clarifying on tone and apologise for my own initial reading of it as being snide like that. And obviously we&'re not all-seeing, but we do see a lot around here, we keep our eyes open.
It is bothersome that there's a default assumption of whiteness when someone doesn't state their race and/or ethnicity. At the same time, that assumption doesn't come from nowhere. A good chunk of white people don't even consider it as something worth stating, a consequence of the privilege that allows them to simply not think about it. And quite frankly, in my own view, if I see someone using the word mutt around here without having any indication of being multiracial anywhere, my first assumption *will* be to assume they're monoracial and likely white, and that goes specifically for the term mutt because of how frequently it's dismissed as being a racial slur, and how immense the ignorance of it being one is. I don't think that means to attack people using the word, obviously not. Just means I'm gonna raise an eyebrow, maybe ask them if they're aware, see if I've gotta teach them or not yeah?
I also frankly think it would be... odd? Incongruent? for someone to avoid stating their race out of fear of racism, and yet in the same spaces use racial slurs. Perhaps though this is my own self-centeredness, who knows?
