Ashita No Joe (Tomorrow’s Joe) • Art Release
“TOMORROW’S JOE (RISING RED REVENGE)” was originally created as part of an official 85th anniversary POPEYE exhibit—where Asao Takamori (aka Ikki Kajiwara) + Tetsuya Chiba’s Yabuki Joe • あしたのジョー was to take on the famed spinach-munchin’ salty sailor, after rising up from his final resting position at the end of the official manga.
Tokyo Subway Station (Shitamachi) 下町? Many fans are still unsure as to whether Joe died or not, despite Takamori suggesting that he had, in a 1979 biography. Alas the Joe vs Popeye art went unfinished due to the King Features participation conditions but some of the prototype sketches still exist and they’ve been remixed here by Danconia into 2 UltraMOD offerings (a version of Joe alone, and one of the Popeye + Joe together). Note: The Popeye exhibit would eventually feature another piece altogether where Joe was replaced by Olive Oil (see Popeye: Land of the Rising Sailor). https://vimeo.com/147808424 The greatest anime of all time—Ashita No Joe!
