The presence of plague on the island had set anxiety bubbling within him. Memories of his childhood spent in convalescence drifted to the front of his mind. Despite the various health issues he had suffered as a child, he had never come close to a brush with the plague. Until now. And despite a healthy adolescence and adulthood, he was scared. He had too much to lose to buboes and gangrene. He had largely confined himself to the English apartments, although a majority of his time was spent ensconced in his room in the corridor that house the rest of the English servants.
In the days following the discovery, he had seen far less of Anneliese than he would have liked, but the fear had enveloped him. He had sent her a note, summoning her to his chamber, and he could only hope that it had reached it’s intended untampered with. His room was more than a little haphazard, with papers and books covering any free surface. He could only hope that Anneliese wouldn’t mind too much, should she be able to get to him.
Hearing a soft knock at the door, he opened it, relief settling in him at the sight before his eyes. “I was worried you wouldn’t be able to get away. Did anyone see you? Come in.”
