My thoughts on The Book of Life

So, my girlfriend and I saw The Book of Life tonight. I was a tad disappointed.. I'll put it under a read more just in case.

I'll talk about what I liked first. I was very enthralled by the character designs. While not all of them were exactly great (and didn't transition into 3D very well), I liked how they were all very stylized and matched with the storybook-esque theme of the movie (La Muerta being my favorite character, btw). The backgrounds of the town and the festive feeling of the Land of the Remembered really struck me. I also liked how it was very energetic and had an overall happy tone throughout. The art direction was very lovely, and that's what kept me mostly engaged. I really liked how La Muerta and Xilbaba had that strange relationship going on, and how they played off each other. The fight scenes were really well paced and put together, and were fun to watch.

What I didn't like was mostly story elements that I thought brought the movie down, a lot. I thought the love triangle between Manolo, Joaquin and Maria was contrived, and you pretty much knew from the beginning who she was going to be with. There was no tension there. The fact that all the music in the movie was 90's American pop guff was really sad (Creep?? Really?) The humor was really hit and miss, but that's not a gripe with me, really.. I guess I was mostly disappointed because I was expecting a movie that delved into Dia de los Muertos and explored all the creative possiblites that could come from a movie like that. However, it jus felt like a love story that had the backdrop of Dia de los Muertos.. 

 Overall,  it's not a bad movie. It's entertaining and the art and character designs were really wonderful, I just was expecting something a little different I suppose. I don't regret seeing it, and would love for there to be more movies that focused on cultures like this..

(Also, this wasn't a problem with the movie but I have to mention it...Xilbaba's character reminded me a lot of Discord, I think it was his head shape;;)

However these are just my opinions, and if you have the chance, you should go check it out for yourself!

Well I'm back!

It took us a month to get internet at our new place, but we finally have it. Alot of stuff has happened and during our long sit without internet, I was able to watch a lot of the stuff we had sitting around...(including anime I've never watched) And I started playing Fire Emblem Awakening, which I enjoy quite a bit! I'll probably talk more in depth about all that fun stuff later~

If anyone even noticed I'm gone, I have returned!
