leporid of the day #2 — the antelope jackrabbit! (lepus alleni)
the antelope jackrabbit, AKA allens jackrabbit (named after allens rule) is a large hare found in arizona and north sonora! it is commonly recognized for its VERY large ears. thats where it got the name antelope jackrabbit from actually!
it has two subspecies, which are lepus palitans, and lepus tiburonensis.
it is related to the blacktailed jackrabbit and the whitesided jackrabbit. it also has an old extinct ancestor called lepus giganteus, living about 2 and a half million years ago. its suspected to be the antelope jackrabbit and blacktailed jackrabbits ancestor! pretty cool stuff!!!
it is widely considered to be the most handsome looking hare out there. it is VERY fittingly titled in my (coil, i write these) opinion. just look at how pretty they are! ^_^
trick or treat!
Trick! you get a lagomorph instead!
You get an antelope jackrabbit (Lepus alleni). Despite the name, its actually a hare and not a rabbit. At up to 58 cm (23 in) long, they are considered larger hares. They can run at speeds up to 72 kph (45 mph) to escape predators and cover lots of ground. While they are herbivores, they have also been seen eating soil to get some extra minerals.

The truth that no one wants to admit that actually if hares/jackrabbits would talk they would be pretty sensible and nice guys but rabbits would manage to sound disturbing.
-The world is against us, there are neither allies nor dependence. Everyone is for itself and the truth is, we are all waiting for the imminent embrace of death.
-Oh well, yes. But bro, wtf
mosaic-inspired portrait of @defrostedvertebrae for a trade, you have a lovely world inside and out. wanted something to try and capture their aesthetic while making it bright with color like a woven tapestry.
