UFC Fight Night results, highlights: Glover brutalizes Anthony Smith
The journey from Glover Teixeira back to the top of the pecking order in the light heavyweight division is almost complete. Brazil's 40-year-old recorded his fourth straight victory on Wednesday by handing out a brutal beating to Anthony Smith before the fight was mercifully stopped at UFC Fight Night in Jacksonville, Florida in Round 5 of their main event. The second of three battle cards in eight nights for the UFC in front of an empty Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena featured a pairing of former title challengers who had come up short against champion Jon Jones beforehand. After relying on his strength, timing and experience to undo Smith, Teixeira (31-7), who lost a 2014 decision to Jones, could now be one more win away from a rematch. "It's not how you hit, it's how hard you get hit and keep coming forward," Teixeira said. "That's what it's all about, baby." Teixeira had difficulty with the quicker and younger Smith (33-14) in the first two frames, before seemingly rallying to hurt Smith in Round 2's closing moments. The next two rounds turned into a one-sided beat-down as Teixeira was consistently able to drop Smith but struggled to finish him on the ground in several attempts by not being involved enough and wasting too much time looking fruitlessly for submissions. But, despite his body language suggesting he was a done fighter, his corner seemed to be behaving reckless by sending Smith out for Round 5. It was not long before Teixeira dropped Smith in the final round before gaining full mount and eventually flourishing enough with clean punches to give Jason Herzog an excuse to jump in. "I was hoping (Smith slowed down)," Teixeira said. "The guy hits like a truck but I moved my head a lot. I trained so hard." "I have had to do some changes, of course. I had to go to UFC (Performance Institute) and learn new diets," Teixeira stated. "You have to open your mind and look for help when things start going wrong, and that's what I did. Here I am, baby, and I'm going on another run for that title." Smith, who started to recover from the loss of Jones by retiring Alexander Gustafsson after last year's submission, joined the fight after a pair of surgeries on his right hand following a 10-month layoff. He also endured a scary home invasion in April which he described after subduing the intruder as "the toughest fight" of his life.
