American family farmers speak out: Trump ‘took away all of our markets’

Family farmers are making their voices heard about the devastation to the industry that is being created by the Trump tariffs.

Yahoo News reports:

“The White House recently announced that it would be providing an additional $16 billion in aid to American farmers affected by the trade war between the U.S. and China.

But the problem for American farmers has becomes bigger than something a bailout can fix.

‘This trade thing is what’s brought on by the president and it’s really frustrating because he took away all of our markets,’ Bob Kuylen, a farmer from North Dakota who grows spring wheat and sunflowers, told Yahoo Finance. ‘We live in an area where we’re kind of in the middle of nowhere. It costs us a lot of money — over $1 a bushel to get our grain to markets.’

Since trade tensions began in 2018, farmers have faced major financial challenges, since China was once a major U.S. agriculture buyer.

And losing customers has become a major issue. Soybean farmers have been dealing with this, as China has turned to other countries like Brazil for soybeans. Kuylen said this is also happening for wheat farmers, as China has begun importing wheat from Russian regions.

‘All these countries went to different countries to get their grain,’ Kuylen said. ‘How are we going to get the relations back with them to buy our grain again and be our customers?'”

Trump Administration has increased the firing of disabled employees

Disabled federal employees are being let go at alarming rates under the Trump administration.

NBC News reports:

“In 2017, the government fired 2,626 full-time employees with disabilities, according to documents from the EEOC obtained by NBC News. That marks a 24 percent increase from 2016.

The EEOC data indicates that workers with disabilities were fired at almost two times the rate of those without disabilities.

Democratic lawmakers questioned the Trump administration’s treatment of disabled federal workers in June, penning a letter to the Office of Personnel Management, the government’s chief human resources agency, requesting updated personnel data. The lawmakers, led by Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., expressed concern that federal workers with disabilities were being fired at higher rates than those without disabilities.

‘After hearing concerns from her constituents, Senator Duckworth is working to make sure that the federal government is a model employer that treats everyone fairly, including those with targeted disabilities,’ said Evan Keller, spokesperson for Duckworth.

Trump moves to decertify union that represents immigration judges

“The Justice Department has moved to decertify the union of immigration judges, a maneuver that could muffle an organization whose members have sometimes been openly critical of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement agenda.

The department filed a petition on Friday asking the Federal Labor Relations Authority to determine whether the union, the National Association of Immigration Judges, should have its certification revoked because its members are considered ‘management officials’ ineligible to collectively organize, according to a Justice Department spokesman.

The move suggested escalating tensions between overwhelmed immigration judges desperate for greater resources and a Justice Department pushing them to quickly address a backlog of immigration cases.

‘This is a misguided effort to minimize our impact,’ said Judge Amiena Khan, vice president of the judges’ union, which has publicly criticized the use of a quota system in immigration court and other attempts to speed up proceedings.

‘We serve as a check and balance on management prerogatives and that’s why they are doing this to us,’ said Judge Khan.

Unlike other federal judges who are part of the judicial branch, immigration judges are appointed by the attorney general and are employees of the Justice Department. Though sitting judges are prohibited from speaking publicly about issues that could be considered political, representatives of the immigration judges’ union can speak publicly about Justice Department policies on behalf of its members.”
