Why. Why would you wanna throw an orange at a bird 😂😂
Okay, so here’s the story.
We do this thing every year where we show kids metamorphosis. We get tiny caterpillars, watch them put themselves into cocoons, and eventually emerge as butterflies. Because science is cool. I wait for it every year, as I am really into insects.
Yesterday, we were releasing our butterflies out into the wild after they were fully grown. The kids love to watch the butterflies they’ve cared after fly free into the wild.
So we’re letting the basket open for the butterflies to emerge one by one. This one butterfly, however, didn’t want to leave the orange we left at the bottom of the basket for it to eat when it hatched. I picked the orange up and tried to shake it off. After a bit of coaxing, this butterfly takes off.
Well, doesn’t this Robin decide he’s going to swoop down and attack it.
So there’s 16 5-year-old kids and two grown adults all yelling at this bird going after a butterfly. Thankfully, it missed, and the butterfly got away. So the bird is now sitting on the school roof and glaring down at us.
I looked up at it, orange raised in hand, and yelled, “You go after our butterflies again and I will pelt you with oranges!”
It eventually flew off and left us alone.
Fast forward to when we’re all playing out in the yard. I see three boys running around pretending to be butterflies, and one of them is the designated bird. Well, the bird kid grabs onto one of the butterfly boys and hold him there.
And the butterfly boy yells, “Help! Someone throw an orange at him!”
This continued for at least 5 minutes. I think my co-teacher was gonna pee herself laughing.
So I am now known as the teacher that will throw oranges at birds.
