Let’s kill some shit!
I'm here asking what story you would write for th title "and other machines"
Thank you for putting this somewhere I can't ignore it forever, I have so much chaos that I do need to type it all out instead of talking to you in circles on the bedroom floor 💜
And Other Machines
There is, in fact, such thing as a perfect society. Living costs nothing, and those that choose to work are assigned to projects intended to improve their city. Those who choose to stay home and take care of things like cooking and cleaning and, if they choose, any kind of children or pets, are given property and assigned a chosen worker to take in under their roof. Those who cannot take care of themselves are assigned to established households who can take on more responsibility.
Icarus "Cary" Lane doesn't want to do either of those things. They don't want to work in the hot sun to build homes or pave roads. They don't want to stay at home all day long and take care of other people and be utterly bored. Being assigned to be indoors or outdoors with no variation whatsoever doesn't appeal to them. They want to do more than just better their city when there's a whole world out there that could be bettered or, at the very least, explored.
When Cary reaches their twentieth birthday and is presented with The Choice, there's a third option presented on the multiple choice form. Work, Home, or Other. No one had ever mentioned the option before, never let on that there was something else beyond the binary choice that their society prepared them for from the age of ten. But it was exactly what they wanted. Other was the only definition for the life they wanted, the thing that only came to them in quiet moments and dreams.
But Other is something beyond even what Cary could have imagined, a secret that the government doesn't even whisper about among regular citizens. They're armed with new knowledge, and weaponry, and told that they have the same intentions as everyone else they knew growing up. They were bettering their city. They were protecting their city. They were protecting their society from the outside threats - the nearby cities that used antiquated things like money and job interviews instead of assignments.
No one inside the city knew about the war outside of it. No one inside the walls really knew what Other meant. But Cary and the Others knew that the society they knew could collapse at any moment.
