Looking into font pairings and what typefaces work well complimenting each other.
A really interesting article about hierarchy and type. Some Useful information provided in this.
Part 1: The Detection of Types--by Paul Dean The detection of types is one of the most elementary branches of knowledge to the special expert in crime.--The
Please read and also check out parts 2-5 also. Some of this infornmation is included in the previous posted links but insight from different designers and typographers from a veriety of articles can really help reveal a bigger picture of all things type.
A glossary of terminology relating to digital fonts and typefaces; defininitions and descriptions for typographic features
The extras chapter of the online companion to the book Thinking With Type, written by Ellen Lupton
Here is another great source of information about type. This page doesnt speak only about typecrimes but covers the bases of a lot of technical informations too, such as editing (soft and hard copy) and proof reading.
If there were a Ten Most Wanted list for typographic crimes, these hardboiled miscreants would be on it. Learn what the ten worst (and most common) type crimes are, and how to avoid them
I have started looking at type crimes and terminology. This has been really interesting and has shed some light on common mistakes and also the 'behind the curtains' ins and outs that make up creating a good typeface and using it in an appropriate professional manor.
Project Direction Ideas & Crit Feedback
Idea
Semiotics and hierarchy - using Signage as a hierarchy tool. Thinking of the book and its pages as an environment and how signs can effect our reading experience, how we view the page and the hierarchy effects ? Eg. Stop signs to signify stopping on a page, "No ______"(prohibition, like no smoking) signs to 'prohibit' from reading a paragraph (using a flap [see sketchbook 'semiotics' tittle]), Warning signs to draw attention.. ? Signs to use: entrance FRONT "Prohibition" (no smoking ring) - suggests do not read - useless infornmation in text or perhaps 'moan at reader for not following the sign to not read it' Keep to the left - all type on left in a single collum ? left aligned type with obviousl rag Stop Sign - ???? Emergancy exit ? flap/tab going straight to back of book ? pertrudes out of side of pages so accesible on every page,(when tab pulled it pulls all pages up and opens end page) Safety signs "lift with arm not wrist" (at first page disclaimer type thing ? perhaps have other disclaimers with it ?) illustrate the icon of wrist lift and arm lift?) Beware of paper cuts ? exit - BACK Keep Clear - gap or blank ? more of a direction for designer than the reader....perhaps not use ? Mind the gap - near spine gutter ? words falling into it ? or stay behind the yellow line ? Info in the gap have to spread pages to read ? turn right - extra long page folded inward so you have to turn the page right Caution slow - Big tracking and leading ? Look both ways - type on both far sides of the page ? danger fog - tracing paper overlay danger cliff - hanging off the side of page - (bleed edge) height restrictions - condensed type ? - nothing at top of page only on the lower half ? caution rivers are dangerous - big rivers in block of type ? right lane ends - right hand collumm of type end early ? diverted traffic - collum text split in half and jolted aside into next collum ? CONTENT - write about the context of each signs and the environment they are normally seen in ? Making - tabs, speed limit sign or slow sign and use tiered pages so no flicking through is possible ?
Crit
After developing this idea I attended a Crit in which I recieved some feedback and idea input. We decided that the idea of having tabs and flaps etc. (for example emergency exit tab) would be somewhat of a gimmick and could take away from some of the more technical ideas that I had produced from this.
These ideas include the use of signs that relate to typography and using the typography elements to illustrate the sign, whether it be through type technical terms, type crimes or even typesetting and compostion
I will research into type crimes and type terminology to get a better understanding of the workings of type, how to make it visually and technically appealing and common mistakes or 'type crimes' which can negatively impact the use of type.
As an outcome I may use or commit type crimes in an ironic or demonstrative way in order to express an idea. I will approach this very sensitively and do this in a very considered manor in order to maintain good design.
An amazing example of how positive input into and environment can really change the mood and atmosphere.
This "skate spot" has recently been refurbished and renewed in order to positively contribute and nourish the skateboard community. Although not signposted as far as i can tell i assume that this was at some point an area in which skateboarding was prohibited. since that prohibition was lifted it has nourished and grown the skate community and as Eric Koston states has really impacted his life and career in a very important way.
I think that councils all over the word should support communities like the skate community in this way by opening up public spaces to be more accessible and inevitably more enjoyable and nourishing.
