Does anyone else have Feelings about houseplants? Something along the lines of: I’m sorry you are growing in this weird indoor environment without bugs or nearby plant friends to share your soil with or natural rainfall. I’m sorry you’re so far from home, which is probably a tropical or at least more temperate place. I think it’s adorable that even people who live in big cities and couldn’t name one plant outside their doorstep instinctively like the feeling of having plants around and want to bring green, living things into their space. I’m sorry you live in “potting mix” from the hardware store that doesn’t actually contain much life, inside a plastic pot. It makes me sad to think about people who are riding the houseplant fad train but haven’t been inspired to learn much about the plants outside (these are imaginary people, I don’t know if this is actually common, maybe foraging and ecology are also having just as big a popular culture moment bc everyone I know follows blackforager and has read Braiding Sweetgrass). Your flowers make me very happy, your baby leaves warm my heart. I’m sorry your sunlight comes through a window.
(have any of you ever read the picture book The Salamander Room?)
