The normally cloudy and downtrodden skies were clear this evening; a colorful array of oranges, violets, and blues. Skinny and Nico were already almost finished lighting the street light Ulthane had helped set up earlier that day. Zahra and Umaru have planned the lights for a while now, but never had the means to do so until the enormous Maker showed up. With his help, the human camp would be much brighter at night.
Simone offered to ward the streetlights, so that they might offer a little more protection through the night, but both Zahra and Chef suggest she not, since she had been preforming all sorts of spells throughout the day, and the normally glowing elder woman was slow and sluggish. Her shoulders slumped and she slouched, so she was told to go on and get some rest.
She didn't want to, but she was feeling tired. Perhaps I should make a few rounds and check on everyone first, she thought.
The campsite was a small area, only about the size of your standard parking lot. Most of the residences were consisted of tarp tents and makeshift shelters constructed of scavenged metals and other parts. Simone helped build a great deal of this place, from when she first happened upon the group or nomadic ladies and their other... friends.
Grace and Lauren were the first Simone ran into, both sitting together on a cot, talking to each other about nothing in particular. Grace was brushing her sister's hair, and opposite the two girls were two enormous draconic heads poking into the tent from outside, one puffing vaporous clouds from his nostrils, the other snoring peacefully.
Simone was still uneasy around those two, but they never caused any trouble. Never for Gracie, anyways.
"Hey girls," Simone greeted as she peeked inside. She smiled when they both grinned at her.
"Hey Simone!" Gracie pushed her glasses back onto her nose. "Is dinner ready already?"
"Yeah, it's real early," Lauren interjected, peering outside behind Simone.
"No, I was going to go and take a nap. I just wanted to check up on you girls." The witch stood in the entryway and couched into her fist. "How's your legs holding up?"
Lauren gave her legs a wiggle. "Im feeling a bit better, and I've walked around a bit,"
"I know. I saw you earlier."
"Yeah. It still kinda hurts, but I'll be okay."
Grace began brushing her own hair when Simone left and moved on to the next tent. Ellie was napping. Must have worn herself out running around with the scroungers and messing with Ulthane all day. She was curled up on her little bed o the ground, clutching a pillow in her sleep. Despite not being invited in, SImone couldn't help but put her blanket back over her while she slept. Madi or Shelby would wake her up for dinner later.
Outside again she saw Skinny and Nico walking back from the camp's perimeter. Nico waved her down with her buckets.
"Hey, we oiled all the lamps like you asked," Nico started, raking his hair back when Simone took the four buckets from him.
"Yeah, and they're all lit." Skinny piped up. "You said something about setting up wards earlier, right? When are you gonna do that?"
The witch sighed and cleared her throat. "Maybe tomorrow morning. I've been warding and hexing all day. I need a break."
"Well have you eaten yet?" Skinny started to sound like herself. It made her chuckle.
"No, not yet. But I'm trusting you would come and wake me when it's ready?"
An eager nod and a hand on her shoulder. They went their separate ways. The evening grew darker.
The witch shuffled down the narrow pathway and stopped at the tent adjacent to hers before she left to rest. She knocked on a steel panel that made up the front walls. Silence.
"Hex? You alright, dear?"
At first, there was just more silence.
"Simone?"
"Yeah, it's me." she started, standing awkwardly in from of the door. "Are you feeling okay? I was just checking up on everyone."
She clasped her hands in front of her and waited patiently for a response. Nothing happened other than the disheveled man stepping outside wrapped in a blanket. "I'm not feeling so well."
The witch threw the last bit of her wood into a firepit and set her cauldron over it. Hex described what sounded like a cold, so Simone was going to fix him up some tea to help him perk up.
She poured water into the cauldron and sat Hex down on her cot and had him sit before her. Luna had given her a few oils of mint the night before, which the witch was silently thankful for. She applied some oil to his neck and forehead, and gave him a piece of her prayer cake that she had made this morning. It was just a sweet break roll with some orange. It was all she had. She'd have to meet with Luna again soon.
"Where'd you get all this stuff?"
"Hm?" Simone shook those thoughts from her mind when he next spoke.
"I mean this stuff-" Hex pointed a finger up, up where the colorful glasses of dried herbs and flowers were suspended from the tree branch that made up Simone's roof. "Where'd you get it all? The flowers?"
Simone could feel her mouth go dry. She almost said she'd had them with her. She took a deep breath through her nose and closed her eyes, thinking of an answer.
"I've been finding a few plants here and there, and whenever the scavengers go out, I always ask them to bring back any plants or flowers they find, so that I might propagate them and attempt to re-grow them."
Hex let his gaze wonder across the ceiling, examining the colorful bottles. "You've managed to find a lot of things, huh? Herbs, flowers-"
"We've even found some vegetables. Fruits, too."
Simone didn't face him, but she heard the stirrings of her covers and his when he shot up from his seat. "Fruits?! No way! What fruits? How many?!"
When she next looked, just over her shoulder, there Hex was. Goodness, he was tall. Intimidating for a moment there, but she knew better.
"Iv'e managed to scrape together only a few seeds, but they aren't ready yet. I need more holy water, something to get them started. Then I can try and get them to start growing, but even that will take time. Too much time, I fear."
Hex reached over to a large Ivy plant that was doing phenomenally well. Its vines and leaves curled about themselves, bright and green and shiny. He spoke quietly, almost as though he didn't even want her to hear him.
"How do you get all these things to grow like they this?"
Simone giggled. Everyone had asked her that since she had gotten here and established her green thumb. The answer was always the same, and the answer was always vague:
"Magic, of course. I'm a witch, am I not?"
Simone kept her tea warm in case someone wanted to come by and have some for themselves. After Hex left with her healing spells, and her blessings, she retired to sleep, feeling like a sack of rocks when she at last laid down. She was worried about sleeping, worried that she might go another night without communion from her angels.
Last time, it was Ray she had spoken with in her dreams. He had given her the directions to the other survivors, and had given her a powerful tool in holy oil and Celestial Matches. He'd given her a few gifts of his own, which helped out her fellow humans a great deal, but he also warned her. He warned her that there were going to be big bad things coming their way. They would not stay in this place for long.
She wished that they would commune with her more often, but it had been two weeks since her last dream speech. She hasn't heard or seen her angels since. She was scared for them. If anything happened to Ray or Luna, then how was she going to find Mars? What would happen if she lost her connection to the deities who gave her power? She wouldn't be able to heal her team! Her family! She wouldn't be able to charge wards, or cure wounds, or summon holy fire-
Before she could summon another worrisome thought, her tired eyes willed her to fall asleep. She would have to worry about that later.
Because @imagine-darksiders started it, I’ve decided to join in!
Apocalypse survivors seem wary of my demons. They mean good! Give em some love!

[SIMONE] <standard greeting> Hello again, dear.
[<PLAYER>] I've been making friends like you suggested.
[SIMONE] And?
[<PLAYER>] People here aren't as bad as I thought they'd be.
[SIMONE] I knew you'd come around. Who have you spoken with thus far?
[<PLAYER>] Lyz, Weasel, Hex, Skinny, and a few of those kids?
[SIMONE] My little sunspots. Well, I certainly hope you keep up the good citizenship, and I'll continu to help you and heal you when you need it.
[SIMONE] Speaking of which, how are you feeling?
[<PLAYER>] Much better now, thank you, ma'am.
[SIMONE] Splendid. Listen... can I ask another favor from you?
[<PLAYER>] What is it?
[SIMONE] My poor Bridgette has been having awful nightmares, and she's hardly getting any sleep; Weasel mentioned earlier about having something that might help her, would you be so kind as to ask her about it for me? I'd like to set Bridge down for some sleep, but- *glances over at the little one nodding off, drawing in the corner*
[SIMONE] It hasn't stopped, you know. Ever since day one she's been whacked from her sleep by these nightmares, these... visions. Anything will help at his point.
[<PLAYER>] Alright, I'll ask them for you.
[SIMONE] Thank you so so so much. Here, take this for your troubles.
