Welcome to Michigan -- or at least, what's left of it. The world as we knew it has crumbled and society is now a thing of the past. All we have now are the quarantine zones where people live as close to normal lives as they can. Outside the quarantine zones lurk the infected, creatures that were once human but have since been contaminated with a virus that causes brain deterioration. Symptoms include feral behavior, highly aggressive responses (often attacking anything or anyone on sight) and blindness which all become more severe over time. The Militia have taken upon themselves the management of the quarantine zones, though they are anything but kind and benevolent rulers. Militia members have been known to abuse their power. The peaceful citizens inside quarantine respect but also fear them. Some resist the Militia as well as the rules they enforce, wanting to return to the life of liberty and law they once knew rather than one of martial order. These Rebels seem to be based in Quarantine Zone 62 but it seems they have ears and eyes everywhere. There are some who risk the unknown world outside but with two very important distinctions. The Nomads are generally more peaceful scavengers. Quarantine Zone 62 has allows them to exchange loot they scavenge for resources but that is the only contact the two groups have. There are, however, those who pillage, loot and shamelessly practice cannibalism. These individuals are known as the Exiles and are avoided at all costs by any other faction or individuals.

It's been 8 years since Titaniara Battenberg, leader of the One Panem uprising, overthrew the Snow dynasty and installed herself in power. Among her changes: Capitol children now have a Reaping bowl of their own, but there is more exchange between Districts than ever before.

Everything is out of balance, that's clear from the thinning of the veil between worlds. But there's a pure energy that comes from pieces of the same soul coming together. In layman's terms: soulmates. How and when the energy comes to be is distinctive to each pairing or grouping. And while the Ruling Council over the supernatural species in each world were reluctant, they know that part of those souls are in humans. Each piece of the soul bears a mark that is matched only by the other piece or pieces of the same soul. That's mad seer Nïx speech for: soulmates bear matching marks. And their mad seer guides these soulmates together. Which is only possible with Death, a former Reaper named Billie, at the head of the Ruling Council.

But there are those that are refusing to follow the decrees that were set forth, they don't want to be bound to a soulmate. And there are those who hunt the supernatural beings, refusing to bow to any law that has to do with them. These Rebels and Hunters are pivotal to keeping the worlds from imploding, but they seem much more intent on letting everything fall to ruin . Gratefully, Nïx has plans to guide their soulmates to them, but it's unclear if they'll make it in time to keep the new apocalypse from coming to a head. With more and more scenes of carnage popping up, and the worlds becoming easier to traverse between, it's clear that it's now a race against the clock.
