@apologija I wanted to reply to your reblog but didn’t want to hijack OP’s post!
you have a good point about reddit being hit and miss but tbh so is tumblr. reddit doesn’t have a reputation for hosting hate groups for no reason, but i don’t necessarily judge the quality of a community by the status of its admins. like i said, reddit is a HUGE community, so any drama going on there will probably be on a much larger scale. tumblr of course has the occasional anti-sjw, edgelord, nazi, troll blog, whatever, but for the most part it’s an echochamber of very similar people with very similar politics where toxic ideologies have just as much potential to fester and grow.
the bad shit on reddit is the same bad shit i’ve dealt with the entire time i’ve been on internet. the bad shit on tumblr is a new and exciting flavor and like i hate it so much
also, racism/misogyny/transphobia exists in every fandom space. every single one. i mean, that’s why i don’t participate in fandoms as much as I’d like, and when I do it’s a minefield i’m prepared to navigate.
but like, everyone’s experience just depends on the communities they interact with and how they engage with the platform. for the most part that’s true of any web community. i’ve also been slowly leaking back into dA and i’m finding my latest go-round with it to be much more pleasant. it’s about the company you cultivate, and i find that sites with larger user bases have a better chance of cultivating good company! reddit was just the first one that came to mind because it’s the one i’ve been on most frequently lately.
