Understanding the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): A Simple Guide
A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is a crucial electronic document needed for most UK work visas. Think of it as a virtual “job offer” that your UK employer must generate and assign to you.
It’s not a paper certificate, but a unique reference number. Your licensed UK sponsor (employer) issues it through the UKVI’s Sponsorship Management System (SMS) to prove they are sponsoring your visa application.
The Two Main Types of CoS
1. Defined Certificate of Sponsorship (for applications outside the UK)
Used when you apply for your work visa from overseas. The employer must first get permission (called "restricted CoS") from the UKVI through a monthly allocation process.
2. Undefined Certificate of Sponsorship (for applications inside the UK)
Used for visa extensions, switching visas, or applying for settlement from within the UK. These are not subject to the monthly allocation.
You must have a valid CoS reference number to apply.
The job must meet skill and salary thresholds.
The sponsor must have a valid UK sponsor licence.
At Asher Tomar Solicitors, we guide both employers and employees through the entire CoS and sponsorship process, ensuring compliance and a smooth application.
