Will there be a CD or something along with it? That would be SUPER cool!
Currently we’re undecided on whether or not we’re releasing a physical CD, however we will be talking about it with our participants when they’ve been decided!
Is there a particular theme, like should we focus on the music specifically or our collaborations? Or will there be a general theme that everyone goes under? Thank you!
YES! Our zine is music-themed! Whilst this is open to interpretation, we do ask that your pieces stick to the theme, although there is many ways you can do this, like a performance, a serenade, listening to vinyls in the candlelight, karaoke, teaching, practising etc! For musicians it’s a little different, because music is obviously music, we ask that the pieces are inspired by Ouran, whether it be the scenery, characters or relationships.
There was an option earlier for artists to collab with other artists, musicians, or writers. While i understand how collaborating with other artists work, i was wondering if there were any specific examples of how the artists will be collaborating with musicians or writers. How will it work exactly and what would each be doing in the collab?
Artists can collaborate with writers and musicians (or even both!) by following the same story that’s told in their image! For example, if a writer was to write a story about Tamaki teaching Haruhi how to play the piano, the artist could draw this and the musician could record a song that was as though it were two separate players, one who’s making mistakes and one who is a savant. Alternatively, a musician could capture the atmosphere with their song!
Ah, a curious mind is among our midst, interested in knowing some of the Inn’s secrets that haven’t been disclosed to anyone ever before. How strange, but nevertheless, we aim to please all visitors of the BNHA Myths Zine Inn and will do our best to reveal what we can.
And so it appears that you have come with luck by your side, for the guardian of scrolls seems to have gone out for lunch.
We understand that potential applicants may be curious as to how we will be judging their work in order to pick out our official contributors, questions such as “what are the mods looking for in this zine?” may have popped into the minds of few, it may even pop up in our inbox from time to time..
To put it simply, we are looking for grammar, spelling, tone, and flow of the storytelling. We are looking out for many things which will be explained in this post. These criteria follow the similar trend found across all zines including writers
Now, the thing we’ve all been waiting for: the bulletpoint list!
General syntax
Grammar
Spelling
Punctuation
This tends to be the rule of thumb among judging criteria across all zines including writers, its aim is to ensure the pieces look as professional as possible.
Details and Descriptions
Hook - ability to hook readers from the beginning, especially those applying for brackets A and B!!
We need to be able to see that you can engross the reader even in short pieces of writing. It’s a double edged sword, you may have a passion for description based pieces, however if the get long-winded it may lose its intended effect.
Dialogue Style
Dialogue can be descriptive and must add to the story/characters whenever possible. This does not necessarily mean that single line dialogue is completely prohibited !!
An example of dialogue styles we are wary of: “Hey, what’s up?” / “Nothing much. You?” / “Been okay.”
We must be cautious about exceeding certain page limits in regards to the zine’s overall page count, as an increase in pages results in an increase in production costs. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to accommodate to particular writing styles. We will do our best to support a variety of styles to the best of our ability !!
Tone/Voice
Having your own distinct voice that separates you from other applicants, giving your work the element that has your signature on it.
We are also looking at the way in which writers handle and maintain the tone in particular scenes (such as those with high tension, grief, dramatic effect etc.).
Characterisation
This remains to be self explanatory, we understand everyone includes headcanons into their writing of particular characters and those are always welcomed !! We will be looking for a sense of the character,
Regardless, you can submit samples that are not BNHA related, for those we will take into account all the elements presented above, we will particular focus on your characterisation of those characters to get a sense of how you can write them.
This is what we’ll be looking for when we begin judging application responses, as stated before, this is a single blind review, in which none of the other mods will influence the decision of another during the process. Not until we collate each vote and select our final writers!!
When you're talking about the general world-building for ideas... does that mean we can include ideas about civilians and things that exist outside the Jaegar program?
Yes! The Pacific Rim world is not limited to the Jaeger program and many civilians are affected by both the Kaiju and the Jaegers. It would be lovely seeing a variety of different view points. The only thing I’d say is that the pieces should be kept interesting and as involved with the main focus of the world as possible so not just a daily au where person A cooks for person B and that’s the end. That doesn’t really link to the AU and the world of Pacific Rim.
Hello! I want to know the maximum size for a picture if you are an artist. I normally use a big canvas size and the brushes in my drawing application doesn't really work with 800 pixels or smaller so
The zine will be standardr A5 (1748 x 2480 300 PPI), and so our largest canvas size would be standard A4 (2480 x 3508 300 PPI) for a double-page spread, I hope that helps!!
for the artist application, are you guys looking out for background detail as well?
Hello there, anon!
We will be taking into account all aspects of the artwork examples our applicants submit. All art styles are welcome, and we would not ask anyone to compromise their personal style to try and fit into a certain aesthetic! Please submit examples that you believe best reflect your work.
Feel free to send us an ask with any additional questions!
Hello! are you looking for a ohshc piece in the artists application?
Hi there, anon!
We know that it may have been awhile since people last created OHSHC content so no, we aren’t requiring Ouran pieces for our applications!! So feel free to submit pieces you believe best reflects your work and style!!
Is there a chance you'll be closing apps early, like some zines are apt to do? I'd like to take my time with my samples but didn't want to risk actually missing out on apps :')
Hello anon!!Currently, we have no plans on closing applications early. However, since we cannot give a definitive no to your question, we will be sure to give at least a 72 hour notice of an application date change and give a specific time as well!!I hope that answers your question!- Mod Ary
