“Oh! Hello there, nope -- don’t mind me a bit, won’t be long --” He hadn’t quite expected there to be anyone in the kitchen, but all things considered he didn’t seem all that bothered by it, if the wide, toothy grin was any sign. “Just need -- yep,” the stranger declared, reaching just past the young woman to the shelf behind her, snatching up the box of baking soda from the pantry shelf “Bring this back in a jiffy, well, no, probably not, you don’t mind do you?” He didn’t really give her time to answer, jamming a metal rod between his teeth, working at unscrewing a light bulb that he pulled from ... somewhere, sprinkling nearly the whole contents of the box into the bulb, popping the end of it back on all in the span of a few seconds at best. “Do me a favor, stay right here, and if you hear me screaming like a little girl, do your best to pretend you didn’t, yeah?”

“It’s all right, Charlie,” the therapist’s words cut through the dull echo that was the permanent accompaniment to any and every sound that was birthed within the walls of the Asylum. “I’ve got it from here.” A gentle touch to an upper arm, a flash of a smile and Harleen was slipping past, into the interview room where her patient awaited. Patient, it seemed such a cold and distant description, especially in a place as cold and unfeeling as Arkham. The dull clank of the door closing, locking behind her gave her not a moment’s pause, followed by the sharp clack of heels against metal as she crossed to the table in the center of the room where he was sat. “I wanted to offer an apology for postponing our earlier session,” she spoke, her sparkling gaze seeking out that of the man bundled and trussed on one side of the table. “The dailies said you hadn’t been eating -- I thought I might bring you something a little more enjoyable than the meals here, and --” A smile, flickering, faint, hesitant, the edge of nervousness still young and fresh in her small defiance. “It’s always easier to bend the rules with less eyes watching, right?”

The hard plastic cooler she carried was set down in the center of the table, and she hurried to set out the meal that she’d pieced together, setting it out in front of him before moving to unlock his manacles - she had no fear, not when it came to him, not with the trust that they’d worked so hard to build in their time together. “It’s nothing much,” she deferred. “Chicken cordon bleu, a side salad with a raspberry vinaigrette, some fresh rolls, and wine -- “ A small laugh. “Well, sparkling cider,” she corrected. “I thought it might help pique your appetite, maybe bring a little something nice into the gloom and doom that seems so prevalent here!” The silverware and serving dishes were only plastic ware, even she wasn’t brazen enough to try and sneak in metal past the security checks.

Truth be told, Giles would prefer to be doing his research close to anywhere but in the public forum of the cafe, thankfully at least it was mostly empty, but he had been left with few options. The hotel he’d booked had not been ready for the usual check-in time due to scheduling conflicts and he didn’t have time to waste. The portends were clear and the reports that Andrew had sent back from his preliminary studies confirmed the concerns of the Watcher: that the veil between this world and one of a thousand hell dimensions was wearing thin. He had to pinpoint the exact location of the thinning and ward it before things more serious than the minor apparitions worked their way through.

As it was now, he was tucked away in the farthest booth back, manuscripts, ancient journals and his own notepad spread across the table. Travelling light wasn’t always an optin when one never knew which text onemight need reference, and time and time again he had rebutted Willow’s offer to scan and digitize the texts. (He still remembered all too clearly the consequences of such an attempt at Sunnydale High.) So engrossed in his studies was he that he almost missed the sound of the waitresses approach, clearing his throat as he glanced up just quickly enough to keep from showing signs of alarm. “Ah, yes,” he offered a thin smile. “More tea please -- perhaps a slice of pie?”
