Thank you so much to everyone who came to the opening of Genius Loci and who took the time to say some amazing words about their impressions and thoughts when experiencing the artwork! It was a brilliant party and the most incredible way to wrap up this challenge I set for myself. After years of moaning about how I wanted to get back to creating analogue work, I finally tackled the notion head-on and have been amazed by all the new ideas that have emerged out of this new way to approach my practice. It's also been super exhausting, with unexpected consequences such as migraines and shooting pains in my back, legs and arms from being on my feet for three weeks as I made all the pieces for the show. The romance of hand-crafting things tends to obfuscate the reality of the effort behind it, but the whole process has been a revelation to me. Creating the Archetype wall sculptures. As a trained architect, part of what lights me up is distilling the built environment into their essence, their basic geometric shapes, their archetypes. I started working on these stoneware wall pieces during my artist residency in Tuscany back in 2020, and have been enjoying exploring the theme of finding the essence in my work ever since. The fact these are made with stoneware or terracotta adds to this ethos for me, as working in ceramics is always a slow, involved, mindful process. A little piece of my residency at La Rectoría this past summer, where I created many of the works that will be featured in my upcoming book SOUVENIRS. Over the summer I worked with @apple on a campaign to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, with the theme of Esperanza. We gathered inspiration from traditional and modern architecture from different Latin countries, referencing building hope for the future. The chosen theme of Esperanza celebrates how, in a changed world, Latin communities have held onto hope. Celebrating Hispanic heritage and resilience, knowing that we are stronger together and, if apart, with hope, we are not alone. I was beyond excited to work with abstract compositions for a project of this scale and can’t wait for more opportunities to do so!
