jay? (for the name association thing)
The first association I have for this name is a kind of obvious, unfortunately, so it might be considered a bit boring. I hear the name Jay and I think of the massive families of Stellar’s Jays who live in my hometown. I see them strutting across the deck when they don’t know I’m watching, every motion a strike forward, every pose a fighting stance, as if to show the world that they will take no shit. I see their babies peering into the sky, bodies stretched as far as they can go without losing the balance that keeps them in the nest, faith in the return of their parents as unwavering as the house on which their own home is perched. I hear battle cries and see the scars of war scraped along the side of a coyote who got too close to the family. I see a jay so old he’s missing tail feathers and his beak is bent slightly out of shape; still returning to his children and his grandchildren to help look after each new generation.
It’s a bit cliche and obvious to think of jaybirds, but they’ve woven themselves into my life quite inextricably at this point. I’ve followed their ups and their downs, their little nature dramas. I’ve played dramatic, triumphant background music in my head each time I’m watched a new clutch of baby birds fledge from the nest and grip the sky beneath their wings for the first time in their short little lives. I’ve mourned the loss of babies who weren’t fast enough to evade the ravenous ravens of this town. I’ve kind of started to think of them as a part of my own home.
My second association with the name Jay is rivers or streams pouring into natural hot springs; the ripple of a raindrop on a lake now transformed into the expanding sound of heat consuming as much water as it can from the generous flow of a cool alpine creek. The sizzle of water droplets and rivulets rising into mist as the snow-bound and the boiling waters collide. The softness of plant life greedily edging closer, basking in humid air they could not get elsewhere in the mountains. The sensation of safety, the illusion of instantaneous recovery from ailments both physical and mental alike. Long, rich sighs from open lungs and faces that glow with the colors of a sudden bloodrush, as if some luminescent blush has been applied and now reveals its light beneath the sheer whiteness of mist that crawls across the water’s surface as if afraid to venture out too far. The feeling of knowing in your gut that “warmth” and “joy” and “peace” are all obvious, direct synonyms. I... I honestly have NO IDEA why the name Jay inspires that imagery for me. I’m just glad I got to think about a pleasant, natural hot spring today. It’s peaceful just to imagine it, let alone to be there. Thank you for letting me enjoy this warm, happy thought. ^_^
This reply is to the name-association game, btw, for my followers who might be confused. I’m still playing it, and will be until I get sick of it (yeah, like that’ll ever happen). Send me a name -- your own real name, your favorite fake name, your username, your best friend’s name, your pet’s name, your OC’s name, your favorite character’s name, a random name from a baby book, whatever -- and I’ll tell you the first 1 or 2 associations I make when I hear that name.
