I have been outside since 9:45am. It is now 10:50pm. My son had his crossing over ceremony for Cub Scouts and is now officially an Arrow of Light for his last year of cub scouts!

Am I done?! Nope! Because I’m camping with my son, niece, and nephew.

@heavyhitterheaux you should have talked me out of it and said just spend the day at the camp. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Another Year of Scouts

Another Year of Scouts

Another year of Cub Scouts has come to a close. They had another great year. Camping, hiking, cooking, and community service; I love that they get into all of this. We have such a great little scout community.

They did Scout for Food, Operation Holiday Cheer, Caroling at Jugan House, Regatta Race, Pinewood Derby & Scout Jamboree.  All great experiences that they truly enjoyed.

Learn more about our 2017 filmmakers with our Take 5 series. Meet Christian Walker, director of Arrow of Light.

#1: In 140 characters or less, describe your movie and why someone should see it.

Arrow is a southern gothic coming of age story of a young boy trying to make sense of the suicide of his father's best friend. It's a true story, centered around a family dealing with tragedy, and I think it relevant to anyone who has lost a close friend or family member, especially by their own hand.

#2: Biggest lesson learned in getting the film made? Best part in getting the film made?

The biggest lesson I learned, is when getting interior car shots, you should look in to the alternative to pulling a picture car on a flatbed trailer, and explore green screen instead.

The best part of making a film is always assembling a rag tag group of wonderful, talented individuals and allowing them to use those talents, and getting to sort of act as a conductor, while they surpass your expectations and create something better that you could have imagined.

#3: Tell us about you. What is your movie making background?

I started as a child actor. I did my first film at 12, spent most of my teens and 20s playing music, and then rediscovered my love of acting again in my late 20s. It didn't take me long to start becoming more interested in directing, writing and producing. I've worn a lot of hats in the film industry, just enjoying the process and trying to learn as much as I can.

#4 What do you want the Oxford Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn't obvious from its title or description?

It's based on a true story, written by my friend Randal O' Wain that I've known since I was a teenager, and it was first published in Oxford American in 2013. It's written through the eyes of a 10 year old boy, and has a lot to do with the relationship between fathers and sons. Some of the details of the story did not become known to Randal until he was an adult, and his father was on his deathbed and confided in him.

#5: What does the future hold in store for your film and for you?

I hope that this film is a good calling card for what I can do as a director. I'm pushing toward making a feature soon.

One of my sons took part in the "Arrow of Light" ceremony for Scouts tonight. This ceremony is for Cub Scouts who are crossing over to being Boy Scouts. It had a very moving, coming-of-age kind of feel to it. Here's a little glimpse of one part of the ceremony: The Boy Scouts came in, each holding a plank engraved with a word from the Scout Law. They then read the definition of that trait and placed their plank as part of the floor of a small wooden "bridge." Cub Scouts moving on to Boy Scouts needed to, one by one, cross this bridge to their Boy Scout troop on the other side. Now for the part that made me teary... Before it was time for them to cross, they asked for the mothers to take off the Cub Scout neckerchief when their scout's name was called. They called my son's name and he stepped forward, looking up at me with those deep brown eyes. I fumbled to take off his plaid neckerchief and watched him step away, step across, and be met by the young men on the other side of the bridge who welcomed him, congratulated him, and placed a new neckerchief around his neck. So grown up.
