so in the spirit of christmas i’ve been rewatching my favorite holiday film.

arthur christmas.

for anyone who doesn’t know this film follows the claus family, particularly the youngest son, arthur. he starts the movie in the letter room on christmas eve answering a letter from a girl named gwen who wants a special bike from santa. we see that the santa name is just a mantle passed from father to son and the santa we’re on currently is expected to retire after this christmas by most of the north pole.

his oldest son, steve, basically runs the entire operation like the military and we see that he’s able to revolutionize the christmas process and deliver 2 billion presents with his system. everyone knows steve is the next logical choice for santa and steve is prepared to take over. however when his father comes back he pushes back his retirement another year making steve angry.

the plot of the movie happens because after malcolm—current santa—places his head on a toys button everyone begins to rush to make sure that santa isn’t seen and one toy, gwen’s toy gets knocked off the conveyor belt and ends up not being delivered. an elf finds the gift and tells the claus family but none of them care. none of them except arthur.

steve doesn’t care because he says there’s no way to deliver the present that night and they’ll eventually get to gwen. malcolm doesn’t care but blames steve for the missed child. the old santa—grandsanta—wants to help arthur deliver the present but not because he cares about the child, because he wants to prove steve is wrong about him. arthur just wants to get gwen a present because he wants her to know santa cares about her.

they eventually deliver the present and arthur is named the new santa, and that’s great but i love the family dynamics explored in this film.

Malcolm is a neglectful parent who uses his oldest child’s mind but never gives him credit, he basically ignores his youngest child on the other hand. Grandsanta is obsessed with the idea that he is still Santa and is upset that the operation no longer needs him. Steve is an overachiever who’s forgotten why they’re doing all of this in the first place.

I really wanted to make this post because for the longest time i’ve related to arthur and i still do, but i also find myself relating to steve. he’s not perfect, he doesn’t actually care about what santa stands for he just wants the title. i don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. he’s been doing the work of santa for years with basically none of the credit because his father is the figurehead. that sucks. he delivered 2 BILLION with a B presents in 1 night and his dad continues to rag on him for missing 1 kid. yes gwen matters, but so does the billions of things steve did right and his father refuses to acknowledge that! it’s so frustrating.

ultimately arthur was the right choice for santa, but he needs steve otherwise none of this stuff gets done. and steve sees that in the end. his father finally acknowledges that steve deserves to be santa, but arthur might be the better choice. this one moment of appreciation nearly brings steve to tears and even though it’s all he’s ever wanted, he gives the position up for his brother because he knows that arthur would do a better job than him.

and it’s not about the fucking pool table he wanted when he was 8.
