Stoicism allows a person to be what they are without fear. It stands for suspension of judgement as to free oneself from the imposed limitations of the mind. Stoicism stands for reason as a pathway to ultimate bliss, an open mind that is clear and liberated from irrational worries, complexes and impulses. A lot of human suffering can be attributed to the compulsion to equate certain happenings with hardship, a predisposition to see death and punishment in sickness and dysfunction. Most people assume that things can go right so they suffer when things go wrong. People think that they are established in reason when they assume this, when really they have jumped to conclusions and is not thinking clearly. Right and wrong is a belief system that is contradictory and split. There is only right in the mind of a stoic.
However, stoicism is not promoting passivity and indifference to life. It’s an honest way of facing what the present moment is, a path that honors the development of character. Everything that happens can serve to add to oneself. It’s a way of viewing life that gives it the purpose of goodness. Through reason, one is able to act in accordance with one’s highest calling, which leads to great fulfillment and peace, even in the midst of seeming chaos.
