hii lalou I wanted some advice on how to create your own characters and branch out of doing fanart like lately have only been drawing fanart (like SU and stuff) and I've never created my own oc before and I feel like when I do it doesn't look unique or good to me and my style changes a lot so I'm worried that I'll lose my character too because of it and i love your oc's!! and your art in general I was wondering if you have any tips for me?
i don’t think you should be wondering about style consistency and uniqueness when making ocscreating characters shouldnt be about making some sort of revolutionary design, it should be about having fun! just think to yourself ‘’what do all the coolest dudes in the animes i like all have in common’’ and create the ultimate character u always wantedi sound like i’m joking but that’s basically it really! create someone who you can relate to or who you wish to be, and use them to explore! i don’t create characters to frame them and show them to the World, i create them because i happen to be testing out ideas and concepts that i find fun. my macarons OCs came from an idea i had where i thought ‘’hey i dont think ive ever seen a magical girl that wasnt white/japanese i wanna draw my own and make her different and cool and cute because i love cute but also badass things’’ and then i wanted her to have some friends and there they were poof. i never really thought about the style that much i sorta just went for it
sometimes OCs are a one time thing, like i’ll just see someone on the bus who i think looks interesting and get lost in my train of thought imagining what kind of person they could be and bam i just invented a character now lets draw em it’ll be a fun timeplay with colors, shapes, genres, etc and let the character become alive in their own way. most of the time, the personality and design of a character influence and mirror each other in some way.
you can always have a purpose behind the drawing, like usually when i draw i try to force myself to stay away from standard body shapes or i just kick my own ass to think of ways to make my characters more diverse but thats not really necessary if you don’t want to do that. just go for it!!! you’ll scrap tons of ideas but you’ll have fun and think of new things and creating and sharing your own completely original ideas is super rewarding, in a much different way than making a popular fanart post. be open to your own ideas, if you feel like creating something dont let that feeling pass by, grab it and make something!!! i hope you have a ton of fun with it!!
