Life wasn’t fair. Regardless of the fact that his relationship with the law was somewhat loose, this time Jonathan “Jack” Bird had not been to blame. That rotten liar, Applepalm, had stolen the one treasured possession he had to his name and Jack had been caught attempting to get it back. The car was his by rights!
That hadn’t stopped the sheriff from locking him up. Given his track record for being a nuisance and his many petty crimes, he didn’t hold much hope of being let off lightly.
So, naturally, he’d picked his way out of the cell and done a runner. Hands still cuffed, he fled out into the woods, hoping to get to one of the woodcutter sheds he knew of where he could use a tool to break his restraints.
As he bolted along, his coordination still a touch off from the rum he’d consumed earlier on in the evening, his boot caught a tree root and sent him sprawling in the fallen leaves. His slip caused a flutter of wings nearby as he disturbed the wildlife.
“Bugger.”
