Korra strummed the guitar carefully, the muscles in her arms flexing as she played a few chords. It had been a long time. Her eyebrows were drawn together and her teeth had captured her bottom lip, as she stared intently at the instrument. Asami could tell she didn’t want to embarrass herself, as if the airbending children would mind that she was a little rusty. Meelo probably didn’t even remember the way Korra used to play.
“Three years is a long time.” Mako said, from beside Asami. He was watching Korra intently. Asami felt a little spike of jealousy, because why was Mako talking about Korra at all? But she pushed that ugly emotion down. It wasn’t her place.
The night air was cold and crisp, and Asami’s cheeks were warm and pink. She had put on a blue scarf, Korra’s blue scarf, and the scent of it was a little overwhelming. After three years, she’d forgotten parts of Korra that she was just now remembering – how she always smelt like the sea, how her eyes lit up when she saw Tenzin’s children, how her jokes were always terrible but Asami always found herself giggling anyway.
“Yeah. It’s a long time.” She agreed softly, her eyes tracing a firefly that landed on Jinora’s back.
The airbending children were sat around Korra, who was about ten feet in front of Asami. She glanced up at her, blue eyes meeting green, and smiled broadly. Asami’s heart skipped a beat.
She hadn’t forgotten her little crush on Korra, of course, but now that Korra was back… Well, it wasn’t quite so little anymore.
“This song,” Korra grinned, in her usual lopsided manner, “Is for my girl, Asami. It’s her favourite.”
My girl.
Asami wished so desperately that she was Korra’s girl. The only way she could fall asleep now, was to imagine little scenarios where she was Korra’s girl, and they were together, or almost together, and even though it could never happen those thoughts were how she got to sleep. Some of those fantasies were more savoury than others.
The song Korra played wasn’t Asami’s favourite. She wasn’t sure if she had a favourite song (does anyone?). But it was the one Asami’s mother used to sing to her every night; the song she’d taught Korra, so Korra could sing it to her when they were on the road and she was struggling to get to sleep.
Rohan laid snuggly in Asami’s arms, and she held him more closely, listening to the way Korra sang. She was in love with Korra, probably. She’d certainly never felt like this before.
“Are you going to tell her?” Mako asked.
Asami jumped.
“What do you… Mean?”
“Korra. I see the way you look at her.” He shrugged. “You should tell her.”
Asami let out a long breath of air, checking that Rohan was still asleep. He was three, and a toddler, but he slept more in a day than Asami did in a week.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about Mako.”
Jinora stood up, clapping when Korra had finished.
“Again! Again!” Meelo chanted.
Korra shook her head. “Nah. Guys, I’m going to hit the sack.”
There was a chorus of ‘awe’s, but Korra just bowed and smiled and laughed at them all, before coming over to where Mako and Asami were sat. She leant down towards Asami, and her breath caught in her throat, but instead Korra placed a kiss on Rohan’s forehead.
“I’m going to, uh, go to sleep.” Korra smiled shyly. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“Of course.” Asami nodded, probably too eagerly (but maybe nobody noticed). “Tomorrow.”
Korra walked away, and Asami allowed herself one lingering glance at the back of the girl’s head. Her new hair looked good on her. Suited her. It was probably easier to fight with, and everything would count when they went against Kuvira. Plus, it looked soft. If she ran her hand through it, it would probably be as smooth as silk.
“Don’t know what I’m talking about my ass.” Mako muttered.
Asami punched him in the leg.
