How do you usually plan out your fics? Or do you just kind of wing it?

Winging it is involved, eventually, but I think my general process can be broken down into four steps, more or less.

Step One -- Idea stage. This one can last awhile because it’s literally just having an idea for something I want to write and just sorta thinkin’ it over. Y’know, daydreaming, imagining things that would be cool, directions I could take the idea, pondering how viable it is, et cetera. This stage is entirely in my head, but if I decide this idea is something I like enough to want to write, we move on to...

Step Two -- the outline! This is a really broad-strokes kinda thing, but it’s the part where I plan everything out and actually write down the things that have been floating around in my head. Nothing super detailed yet, but a basic road-map of the story. I jot down all the things I want to happen and figure out the order they should happen in, things that are correlated and should happen one after the other, or how to get from that thing all the way to this thing. There’ll still be some gaps to fill in, eventually, but by the time I’m done with this, I should have basically the entirety of the story planned in a way that makes sense, even if it’s bare-bones.

Then, it’s time for Step Three -- the detailed outline. It’s similar to the regular outline, but it’s more like a zoomed-in version of it. Let’s use DL as an example: in the outline stage of Chapter 19, all I had was a little paragraph that basically boiled down to, “Sans gets Reader an apology present for putting up with him, Reader confronts Papyrus about ditching her and his guilt complex comes out, Reader smooths things over and suggests a playdate.” Which is, yeah, basically what happened, but that’s the keyword, basic. In the detailed outline, I plan out more of the minutiae so in this case: the flow of the confrontation, what’s said by whom, how it all plays out and gets resolved, the brothers talking to each other, yadda-yadda... This is the part where I usually end up preemptively writing some dialogue and jotting down body language/facial expressions or internal monologues the characters may be having, reminders to myself to include that one specific line or draw attention to this thing that’s being called back to, or whatever. It’s like an outline of a bullet-point on the original outline, zoomed-in, like I said!

Having all that planned out and ready to go makes Step Four a whole lot easier because Step Four is -- JUST FUCKIN’ GO, WRITE THE THING, YOU IDIOT, YOU CAN’T PLAN IT OUT ANYMORE THAN THIS, YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED, JUST GO, GOOOOOOOOO, STOP PROCRASTINATING, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! This is the ‘winging it’ part, because yeah, if you’ve done the other steps, there’s not much deeper you can go into preparing so you kinda just have to start! Once you start, you may find that your outline didn’t cover everything, and things change around a little as you add bits or cut things that didn’t work, or have a flash of momentary brilliance that changes everything, yes, it’s perfect! But all the prep-work leaves you-- or at least, me-- in a pretty good place to roll with those punches without it screwing up the entire plot.

But.........yeah, that’s pretty much all I got in terms of process. This is also just how I do it, so everybody has their own process and you gotta figure out what works for you, but if you’re having trouble, this works pretty well for me and helps me keep to a weekly update schedule for longer fics, so y’know... there’s that! XD

Hi Vex I was wondering on what you would think of Bara sized Lamias? Would their personalities change? Or would they just be bigger, goofier beans?

*Oh wow, this is such a great idea. Ok, here goes:

BARA Papython (UT!Papyrus): bigger lamia means bigger hugs, will actually lift you up off of the ground with hugs, HUGS!

BARA Corny (UT!Sans): still mostly sleeps

BARA Krait (Gaster): not quite as timid (because BIG), but still very shy, does not fit in pockets

BARA Honey Bo (US!Papyrus): doesn’t quite fit in his small personal spaces now, can actually pick owner up!

BARA Pygmy (US!Sans): possible collisions while zooming are infinitely more catastrophic, likes to chase cars

BARA King (UF!Papyrus): omg, humans and kittens are so extra tiny, he is even more protective and oh-so-careful

BARA Coral (UF!Sans): now he has an excuse to be close to you because he’s just too big to not be partially in your lap, considers putting you in his hoard of treasures

BARA Chain (SF!Papyrus): extra protective, carries you everywhere, gosh you’re so smol and cute, hide in his jacket

BARA Mamba (SF!Sans): *sigh* just sigh… sneaks into art galleries and pretends to be art, even more of a menace, please the regular size Mamba is as much as this world can handle
