butch4butch qpr.............................
I'm an aroace transmasc enby, i feel really drawn to the label butch bc it resonates with my experience growing up as a "girl" and with how i experience queer masculinity, but i worry IDing as butch would be disrespectful bc of its connection to sapphic identity & how butch/femme are often directly tied to attraction and relationships, but that's not something to relate to bc i don't experience attraction like that at all. I know you won't be able to give a definite answer for the whole butch community but i don't know who else to ask and your blog is such a welcoming and comfortable space. (It's totally fine if you don't want to answer, just ignore this ask then)
hey anon! thanks for sending this in and so sorry it’s taken so long to reply! i’ve been in classes all day!
butch is a historical queer identity, that can have slightly different meanings to different people. but the label butch does not come with romantic or sexual attraction attached to it.
and you’re absolutely right, butch does have a long historical tie with the sapphic community, but it also has historical ties to ballroom, other places in the queer community, and even mlm culture. i know several butches who are aspec and their ace-ness does not negate their butchness whatsoever.
butch can be a role you play, a dance you do with other butches and femmes. it can be your gender, or even your sexuality. it can be the way you experience attraction (or lack thereof). it can be how you relate to this allocentric cisheteronormative world. it can mean queer masculinity. there’s so many options and you fit into one of them anon. you are more then welcome in the butchfemme community, in fact we would be much better for it if you are! (the more butches, the better imo :>)
your aroace identity is queer. it has always been queer, and it always will be queer. asexuals and aromantics ARE a part of the queer community, and as such you have the same access to our history as everyone else. you are not an afterthought.
much love!
