Ashes Reborn - Phoenix by Sonderflex
There's an idea going around that TTRPGs are meant to be "collaborative storytelling" first and foremost. Or that they're functionally a form of improv. And like, that's a valid way to think about your own games, but I think it's dead wrong to say that as a sweeping generalization!
I think it depends on whether you get into the hobby from the "theater kid" side of things or the "nerd gamer" side (and I'm firmly on the gamer side!). The games of D&D etc. that I and the other DMs in my group run are solidly games first, with storytelling coming as a handy side benefit.
The consequences of this for my game Delvers are not just that it's heavily gameplay focused, but also in the sources from which it takes inspiration. I'm not just borrowing mechanics from other TTRPGs and themes from popular media, but I can also take mechanics from other tabletop games that the theater kid side of the TTRPG space likely wouldn't even know about. Core inspirations are the snappy tactical combat of BattleCON and the back-and-forth card-based tempo of Ashes Reborn. I'm also using some combat mechanics and particular characters from the video game Legends of Kingdom Rush.
I doubt anyone here cares, but I have to tell SOMEONE. There's this excellent battling mages card game I own called Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn. It's very edgy, the art is by a wonderful artist named Fernanda Suarez, and the representation of characters is fantastic. I own all the decks (except one, so far—Im coming for you, Echo Greystorm) and am on the subscription.
It's a great game, my brother and I play it often. Making decks is fun, the art is fun to look at. The biggest issue is that winning sometimes feels like cheating. If you built your deck right, you'll be on track to win without competition, and it can be unfun to play past the point of sure loss.
WELL. I happened to check the website today (Plaid Hat Games!) and they JUST ANNOUNCED, just THIS MORNING, that the next product for the expansion is a CO-OP MODE. That's everything I ever wanted. Plus they're coming out with new signature cards for existing characters, new character-less decks, and cool monsters to fight! I'm not sure how it'll all work, since the game was designed with pvp in mind, not co-op, but I'm excited anyway.
Like, so, so excited. I'm crossing my fingers that the expansion arrives in time for Christmas holiday so that we can play it then!
