The conversation flowed easily on the surface.
Ashlyn had shifted slightly closer to you on the couch, her legs tucked under her as she spoke, her voice warm and animated.
“No, because the hotel was insane,”
she said, laughing softly.
“Like Jude booked it last minute, and I thought it was just going to be something simple, but when we got there”
She paused, shaking her head with a smile.
“It had this whole ocean view, balcony, everything. I didn’t even want to leave.”
you said, genuinely meaning it.
“And we barely even did anything planned. Just…walks, food, staying in.”
She glanced over at him for a second, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Your eyes followed her without thinking.
Jude Bellingham had his arm loosely wrapped around her shoulders, thumb brushing against her arm as he talked to Jobe. It wasn’t exaggerated, it was subtle.
Even when he leaned forward to say something, his hand didn’t leave her.
Even when she shifted, he adjusted with her.
Like staying close to her wasn’t something he had to think about.
Your chest tightened slightly.
“…we went to this little café too,”
Ashlyn continued, pulling your attention back.
“You would’ve loved it everything was pastel, the desserts were actually good for once.”
You smiled, nodding but your focus kept slipping.
Because right next to you
Jobe wasn’t touching you.
Not your arm. Not your hand. Not even your knee brushing his.
You shifted slightly, testing it leaning back just a little, enough that your shoulder almost brushed his.
Didn’t even seem to notice.
Your jaw tightened faintly, and you turned back to Ashlyn, forcing yourself to stay engaged.
“So how long were you guys there?” you asked.
“Like four days? But it felt longer,” she said.
“We just kind of…lost track of time.”
She smiled again, softer this time.
“It was nice not having people around all the time.”
But it came out quieter than you expected.
Ashlyn’s eyes flickered over your face for a brief second like she caught something.
“…you and Jobe should do something like that,” she added lightly.
“Just disappear for a bit.”
Before you could answer, Jobe spoke up from beside you.
“We’ve talked about it,” he said casually.
Your head turned slightly toward him.
You didn’t say anything but the feeling settled heavier in your chest.
Ashlyn didn’t seem to notice the shift, still smiling.
“You should. It’s actually really nice just…having each other without everything else.”
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Jude adjust again this time pulling Ashlyn a little closer when she leaned forward to grab her drink.
Your fingers curled slightly against your sleeve.
You laughed at something Ashlyn said a moment later but it didn’t quite reach your eyes this time.
Jobe still didn’t notice.

The kitchen felt warmer than the living room.
Not just from the stove but from everything building under your skin.
You stood by the counter, focused on the pan in front of you, stirring slowly. The sound of oil lightly sizzling filled the silence you were trying to keep.
Jobe and Jude had followed you into the kitchen at some point, their conversation picking right back up like nothing had changed.
“…nah, but the way he played that second half—”
“I’m telling you, he’s been doing that in training too,”
Jobe replied, laughing quietly.
You kept your attention on the food, listening to them talk behind you.
You felt him before you saw him, stopping beside you while still facing Jude.
“…yeah, but you didn't see the one from last week—”
he continued, completely focused on their conversation.
Then his hand reached out.
His fingers settled lightly against your waist.
You froze for half a second.
It was such a casual gesture that you almost wondered if you were imagining it.
But after spending the entire evening watching him barely touch you, something in you immediately resisted it.
You opened the cabinet beside you, even though there were already plates sitting on the counter.
He stopped talking for a moment.
You kept your attention on the cabinet, pretending to search for something.
Jude continued talking without noticing anything.
His eyebrows pulled together slightly.
He couldn't figure it out.
You hadn't seemed upset earlier. You'd been laughing with Ashlyn, talking normally, even joking around with everyone.
So why had you moved away from him?
Instead, he watched quietly as you grabbed a plate and closed the cabinet.
You turned back toward the stove without looking at him.
Jobe stayed there for another moment.
His eyes lingered on you, confusion written across his face.
Then Jude said something that finally pulled his attention back.
“Bro, are you listening?”
But even as he turned back toward Jude, his eyes drifted toward you again.
He just kept wondering what he'd done.

By the time Jude and Ashlyn left, the apartment felt different.
“Text me when you get home,"
you told Ashlyn, pulling her into a quick hug.
Jude gave Jobe a quick dap, then glanced between the two of you for half a second like he could sense something, but didn’t say anything.
And it was just you and Jobe again.

You made sure to take your time.
Skincare. Changing. Brushing your hair. While listening to your favorite music.
You avoided him without making it obvious.
He stayed in the living room, cleaning up.
Neither of you said much.

By the time you got into bed, you were already on your phone, the screen lighting your face in the dark room.
You heard him come in a few minutes later.
His head resting on your lap.
You stiffened slightly, surprised.
You tried to shift, to move your legs
but his arm wrapped around your waist, holding you in place.
“Stay,” he murmured, voice quieter than usual.
You frowned, still looking at your phone.
He didn’t answer right away.
Just adjusted slightly, pressing closer, like he was trying to get comfortable.
“Can I get a kiss?” he asked softly.
You finally looked down at him.
This was the same boy who had been sitting inches away from you all evening.
The same one who hadn’t reached for you once.
Now he was asking for kisses?
“…what?” you said under your breath.
He looked up at you, a little more awake now.
“Just—c’mon,” he said, almost shy.
He exhaled lightly, one hand tightening slightly against your side.
“You moved away earlier.”
That made your chest tighten just a little.
you started, then stopped yourself.
He watched you carefully.
Then the words slipped out anyway.
“You weren’t even touching me.”
Jobe’s expression shifted not defensive, not annoyed.
“…that’s what this is about?” he asked quietly.
You looked away, suddenly feeling a little embarrassed.
“It’s not whatever,” he said gently.
For a second, neither did he.
Then he pushed himself up slightly, enough to look at you properly, one hand coming up to gently tilt your chin back toward him.
“I’m not Jude,” he said, voice soft but steady.
“I don’t do all that…all the time.”
“But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to.”
His thumb brushed lightly against your cheek.
“I just don’t always think about it,” he admitted. “But when you moved earlier…yeah. I noticed.”
Your gaze softened a little.
“…it just felt like you didn’t want to.”
His expression immediately changed at that.
“What? No,” he said, almost too quick.
He leaned in slightly, resting his forehead against yours.
“I always want you. I just…show it differently, I guess.”
Your grip on your phone loosened.
“…you could show it more,” you said quietly.
A small smile tugged at his lips.
Before you could respond, he pressed a gentle kiss to your lips—slow, unhurried.
When he pulled back, he didn’t go far.
His arm wrapped around you again, pulling you down with him this time until you were both lying properly.
“Cuddles?” he asked, a little playful now.
You rolled your eyes—but didn’t move away.
He grinned against your shoulder, pulling you closer.
