My Year of the Book - Day 44: Like C.S. Lewis, who is best-remembered today for his “Chronicles of Narnia” books and his multiple (and quite accessible) works on Christian apologetics, British poet A.E. Houseman had a day job as a university professor. Lewis began as an Oxford Fellow and tutor in English Literature, but he finished his scholarly career at Cambridge, where Houseman (who also began at Oxford) earlier served as Professor of Latin until his death in 1936. And while Lewis’ extra-curricular work remains more widely known today, Houseman was not without influence (despite the fact that he treated his poetry much like a hobby), as the popularity of his book-length “A Shropshire Lad” (1896) can attest. In fact, I recall at least three novels that open with an excerpt from a Houseman poem (including Marcus Goodrich’s “Delilah” from my Day 40 post...see Photo 2 here), and his work has surfaced in several televised places thru the decades on both sides of the pond as well, from Sgt. Hathaway of the British detective show “Inspector Lewis” reciting the final eight lines from “A Shropshire Lad: XL” in Episode 1 of Season 4 in 2010 (Photo 3) to “Route 66” writer/creator Sterling Silliphant borrowing a Houseman line for the title of a 1962 episode, “Shoulder the Sky, My Lad” (Photo 4...note the similarity with the passage used in Delilah). Not a bad track record for a man who refused to allow a full collection of his poetical works to be published in his lifetime.
