I’ve read all of your fics and I love your work, so I hope this is okay to ask, but do you have others blogs to recommend? I wanna meet other writers! Especially if they write angst and whump like you, ngl those are my faves 🫶🏻
omg hiiii this ask made me so happy! 🫶🏻 thank you for reading my nonsense and for asking such a fun question!! angst + whump gang rise, honestly tumblr is crawling with us if you know where to look.
i definitely have some faves i can throw your way (not in any particular order!): @marvelstoriesepic, @mandoalorian, @daystarpoet, @crybabycabin, @peterparkive, @artficlly, @mcrdvcks, @themareverine, @angclone, @fawniswriting, @daddyjackfrost, @coffee-with-bucky, @aquaticmercy, @bcksbarnes, @flowersforbucky
and if you’re hunting beyond recs, even just diving into tags you’ll trip over treasure (and trauma) real quick. also keep an eye on event tags too because the whump crowd goes crazy for things like whumptober/angstober coming up soon and the content is always chef’s kiss!
just wondering how many more oneshots you’re planning to post before you actually finish a seat at the table or point of impact. no shade, but it’s getting kind of hard to keep caring when you keep starting new things instead of following through.
hi there! just wanted to let you know that you maybe didn’t need to make this ask as rude as it came off :)
this the third of these types of anonymous inboxes i’ve received the past few weeks and i was willing to look beyond the first two, but i have a lot of feelings and things to say about this after this one. i truly hope you read it, respect it, and understand it:
i get it. you’re clearly invested in a seat at the table and point of impact, which i appreciate. truly. i love that those stories have found readers who care about what happens next. what i don’t love? the tone that drips from this message like it’s been sitting in a lukewarm glass of entitlement.
there’s been a HUGE uptick lately in bitchy-ass anons crawling out of the woodwork to complain about writers…writing. which is wild, considering every single one of us is doing this for free. free, babes. zero dollars. negative dollars if you count the hours of emotional labor, unpaid creative effort, and time sacrificed from our actual lives to write these stories. which, AGAIN, are available to you at the low, low cost of absolutely nothing.
so if i’m being honest? if you’re going to show up with that energy, i’m going to go ahead and match it. i’m going to throw it right back. because what we’re not going to do is pretend i owe anyone content on a schedule. i’m not amazon prime. i’m not a vending machine you get to kick until your next chapter drops out.
i’m a person. i have a full-time job. like, a real one. a 9–5 that pays my bills and eats my brain. i have a partner. i have friends. i have errands and grocery runs and laundry piles and migraines and plans that fall through and burnout that creeps in when i’m not looking. i have hobbies beyond writing, as shocking as that may be. i love writing, obviously, it’s why i’m here, but my entire existence does not revolve around serving up fic on demand.
i write what inspires me in the moment. and sometimes that’s a messy, emotional one-shot. sometimes it’s me finally chipping away at a draft for one of my series. sometimes it’s a request someone sends me. sometimes its something that came from instantaneous idea and i don’t want to let it go. and all of that? is valid. is mine. is part of the joy i get from being in fandom. this is supposed to be fun, not a second unpaid job where strangers audit my output like it’s a quarterly report.
and if you actually paid attention instead of tallying how many times i post new oneshots like you’re running a fic IRS you’d notice i do still update those series. they’re not abandoned. they are active WIPs that i care deeply about. but rushing them or forcing out chapters just to appease people who forgot that writers are humans is not the move. it leads to burnout. it leads to resentment. and it sure as hell doesn’t lead to good writing.
so yeah. i’ll keep posting what i want, when i want. whether that’s a new chapter or a chaotic little oneshot that dragged me out of bed at 1am. because this is my space. this is my joy. i WANT to share it with a community and have built a lovely rapport of mutuals. and if that’s not enough for you, there’s a simple solution: log off and go touch some grass.
or, and this is a wild idea, maybe just say thank you and enjoy the free content while it’s here.
I saw this thing on tik tok that the op and the comments were saying Bucky is often characterized wrong in fics and one of their main gripes was that the fandoms use of him referring to his partner as “doll.” They were saying like he wouldn’t really use that word, in the 40s maybe but not current Bucky.
Myself I do see him using “doll” maybe because it’s just fannon at this point, but maybe the tik tok has a point ?
Being a writer.,.What are your thoughts?
oh i definitely saw that tiktok too and had some Thoughts™
so here’s the thing…i don’t think it’s wrong for people to write bucky saying “doll,” but i do think we’ve collectively inherited it more as a fandom shorthand than a true character choice rooted in who modern bucky is. it’s become one of those tropes that just stuck around (like steve being called a punk or sam being comic relief), and after enough repetition, it starts to feel like canon even when it’s not.
yes, “doll” is era-accurate for the 40s, and it absolutely could’ve been in bucky’s vocabulary then. but post–hydra, post–winter soldier, post–tfatws bucky and now new avenger bucky? the man who still says ten words max per conversation? idk if he’s got “doll” queued up at the top of his flirtation file. emotionally repressed brooklyn grandpa might not lead with the pet names 😭
personally, i don’t write him saying “doll” much (if at all). not because it’s bad, but because it doesn’t feel authentic to my version of bucky who’s more quiet, deliberate, a little awkward in affection. he might say “sweetheart,” sure, or a name soft under his breath, maybe an occasional “baby,” or nothing at all except a brush of his fingers or a look that means something. that’s the version i gravitate toward: less polished, more raw. more earned, if that makes sense?
that said, fanon is fanon for a reason. we write the version of bucky that speaks to us, and if “doll” is part of your bucky’s vocabulary, that’s valid too!! the key is intention. are you using it because it feels right for your bucky in that moment? or because it’s the expected fandom flavor? both are fine, but being aware of the choice makes it so much stronger!!!
tl;dr — “doll” isn’t inherently wrong, but it might not fit every version of bucky. and for me? i’m more of a “sweetheart” girl. maybe no words at all, just the way he looks at you like you hung the damn moon. ugh i love bucky barnes
I hope this ask finds you well; you kind of disappeared again, hope everything is OK!
Thanks for sharing your most recent fic, too—it was great and I liked it a lot.
Hope to hear from you again soon, take care!
hi!! this is so sweet, thank you for checking in! and thank you so much for reading the new(ish) fic. i’m really glad you liked it :’)
everything is okay! work has just continued to take over my life in the best and most exhausting way possible. lately, it has also been taking me to some really cool places around the world to talk about things i’m been working on, which still feels completely surreal.
and weirdly, being so busy and getting to see so many new places has also been giving me a ton of inspiration to write again. i keep collecting little ideas, scenes, and pieces of dialogue whenever i have a spare second, so bucky has definitely not left my brain even if it probably looks like i’ve abandoned him and this blog entirely.
i don’t want to make any dramatic promises about posting consistently, because clearly i’m terrible at that, but i really do miss writing and being here. thank you for thinking of me and for continuing to stick around 💖
also hopping on the positivity train! your writing is immaculate and i look forward to your fics often!
also - how goes the fic where bucky and reader get buried under a collapsed warehouse? i’ve been.. eying it.
omg the positivity train is going to make me crawl under my desk, actually.
thank you so much. everyone has been so kind and patient and lovely that i don’t really know what to do with myself besides sit here with big wet eyes and an alarming amount of affection for all of you.
as for the collapsed warehouse fic, she does still exist!! she is alive!! she is breathing!! she is under a large amount of rubble, which feels thematically appropriate lmao. i don’t have a timeline for it right now, but it’s like half finished so it’d be a little silly for me to abandon it now 👀
Are you still working on point of impact? love that story so i’m just curious
yes and no, which is the world’s least helpful answer, but unfortunately it is the honest one.
i still love point of impact, and i haven’t abandoned it or deleted it from my brain or anything dramatic like that. it’s just not something i’m actively pushing myself to work on right now because life has been very full, and i’m trying to let writing feel fun again instead of turning it into another little deadline-shaped creature that lives on my shoulder because my job has been and will continue to take a majority of my creative energy. it means the word that you love it though!! 🥹🫶🏻 i truly have high hopes that i will return to it at some point!
I skipped my classes this morning to binge read ur fics and safe to say I’ll do it again 10/10 recommend
omg noooo, i cannot officially endorse this behavior!!!
unofficially, however, i am kicking my feet and deeply honored to be part of your academic downfall. thank you for reading, please go to class, and also maybe bring bucky fics with you for emotional support.
